I may be in the minority here, but I see metal preservation work (as long as it mimicks the original finishing process) as much less of a "sin" than sanding/steaming a stock. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Welcome to the club!
When your cleaning your Garand, be careful when wiping the follower. When I first got my Garand as was a bit unfamiliar with it, I wiped the follower and the bolt came forward and slammed my finger.
You only do that once, believe me.
That looks like an advanced case of "M1 thumb" of the finger. Did you swear?
