Lots of great info here.

I just bought a m14s and it should be here next week. I've read lots but what is the best way to get this sucker clean? I don't think I want to do the dishwasher thing on the synthetic stock. But Ifigure I need lots of rags and some cleaner. Any suggestions?

I read how to field strip it etc..

What should I do when I get it out of the box besides stare and give it a cute name :)

I strip it down and then clean with hot water, rubber/nitrile gloves, and dishwashing liquid(full strength). Then let it air dry, and finally a coat of oil. Grease up your bolt rails, op rod tracks, bolt raceways, bolt lugs, hammer hooks.

Read more and more of the stickies. Download the 2004 Abbotsford Skullboy/Hungry clinic, it's FREE!

Re-assemble and watch "Full Metal Jacket" DVD movie with your M14 :D

When you do a range session, PM me and send me 3 fired brass cases. Only costs you a $ 1.22 stamp and padded envelope. :)

 and welcome to the addiction

Barney

You can also take the stripped rifle and put it in the oven on warm. Melts the cosmoline which then wipes off more easily, followed by the full cleaning as mentioned above. Also makes the house smell nice. :)

Don't forget to check your bolt. The firing pin should rattle around, otherwise there might be cosmoline inside which needs to be removed.

Remeber that guy at the last clinc that though it was a good idea to spray oil in his fireing pin.
LoL!
Don'tkillbill watch the Skullboy/Hungry it's time well spent ;)

Thanks I will watch the videos and I should get it while my wife is away on busuiness so I hope full Full Metal jacket is on Netflix.

I got a set of .308 dies yesterday, 60 rounds and the guy who runs the local gunshop threw in a pile of stripper clips. 43 going on 8.

Anyone know were a cat can score so 7.62 x 51 brass?

Just shoot a few boxes of milsurp through it.

Check the M14 Reloading thread below this one a bit. I think you could push the 180's but I don't know. My buddy hasn't pushed any more than the 168 A MAX bullets through his.

My opinions:

Cleaning: I went outside, put down cardboard and hung the parts from the clothesline and sprayed aerosol de-greaser (type that leaves no film) liberally over everything. Seemed to work well. Cardboard was pretty brown after. :)

Oiling: Look at the FAQs. You want some decent gun oil and some cheap grease (I use cheap $2.00 small tube of Princess Auto Lithium). Apply as directed where directed.

Reloading: I am going to try Sierra Match bullets, but I am getting decent 1 - 2 inch groups with good factory ammo, but then my M14 has had a fair number of mods (My Poly M305 named "Betty" CCG thread).

Take Hungry's advice: Read lots, view the videos a couple of times, ask questions, look at the threads... and be ready to get your hands dirty: your #### won't fall off!! We are all here to support you!!

twist should mirror the real m14- ie 1/12- it's ONLY when you get into custom barrels you get different twists- and then they're only 1/11, 1/10- and yes, you CAN shoot 180s , but only if you either turn the gas off or use the special sadlak piston- but in truth, they offer NO advantage over a WELL PLACED 165- actually, if you look it up, the 165 has a better b/c and sd- i also found that using 180s, that 44 grains of 748 was top end, and 42 was unrelaible- you had to step to 43 at least- that was before i knew better and used my heavy load from my savage 99- factory 180s in 308 step out at 2610, so even factory 180s are HARD on the action- my vels were 2555-so stick to 165's, 168s and a top end of 173's

The Sierra 155's have a sick BC.

Thanks I'll try the 155's.

Yeah my rifle is at a postal station in Dieppe the last stop before PEI. Might see it tomorrow but likely Monday :(

My bench sits empty but atleast I have all the vids and Sticky Threads in this section of Nutz.

Oh yeah ordered an ARMS#18 and a spare 5/20 mag from Wolverine today.

Downloaded Fullmetal Jacket and watched it twice.

Got my towels and cleaner ready then some grease and off to the range. I hope there is a card in my mail box Friday:sniper:

you'll need more than one spare mag- try 5- 2 in each pouch, 1 in the gun- that's JUST FOR STARTERS- the standard loadout had another 6 in the ruc- all 20 rounders- when the silliness of 5 round mags came, i just added more mags and pouches- my drag bag has 6 pockets, all on one side, then the 4 on my belt, and i don't have to carry the ruc
