Howdy all took one of my new M14S rifle out to the range yesterday.I just went out to check functionality. After shoveling out to the 25 metre targets and putting up my target,I loaded one round and fired from the hip.Functioned fine, bolt locked back.Did it again and it worked again.Next loaded two rounds and fired from the under arm position and again for some unknown reason ,things worked fine. OMG this thing rocks.I then took some more ammo loaded on 5 rd stripper clips and fired at the target wow it hit the paper(I had swapped in a garand sight and wasn't sure how close it would be).

I then fired my ivi brass reloads,42 gr 4064 and hornady 165 gr.I loaded them with the stripper clip as well. These are for my bolt gun and were a little close to the front of the mags when loading but went in with a little force. These also functioned fine and left a nice pile to the front right in the snow to pick up later. These reloads also shot about 1" higher the the blue box 7.62 mm ammo I was first using. So I shot 40 rounds in total and no hiccups.I love my rifle.:dancingbanana::dancingbanana:

Great job redoing the sights with a grand. I started to to take mine apart and chickened out cause I didn't think I could get it back together agian:D Glad to hear that everything went the way it sould (no reason for it not to). I love mine too, what a awesome rifle to take out to the range

I'm pretty pleased with mine as well. Took 40 shots and not a problem other than the operator getting cold. There's something quite charming about this gun, and I get a real kick out of hitting a gong at 200 yards with it. Keeping it in supply with ammo is going to be the only challenge.

I know what you're saying Grizzlypeg, I've only had time to shoot 10 rounds through it to make sure it ran like it should but it's a very satisfying gun to shoot and I'm not really sure why. It just felt good, like I wanted to shoot it a whole lot more :D.

Mr 4X4.For me I always fire a firearm that I have just bought from the hip a few times. For me its a CYA thing, and it doesn't cost anything more and I feel a lot safer.

Is hip shooting your first couple of test rounds safer ?

I just did it as I was shooting 180g Factory win. Prolly just a being a wus but I have no experience with Norc and if it was gonna kaboom better to my right than in my face.:dancingbanana:

Great rife btw! A modin' dream!

Thanks for the info on the hip thing.. I will probably do that when I buy my next toy.. I usually just say a prayer and squint with the first couple of rounds.

Pit - 180 grain. that seems kinda large, isnt 150 to 165 what most are putting through thier norc's?

Yup..... a few rounds prolly won't hurt.... but the gas system/oprod was not designed for 180 gr. , a prolonged or consistant diet of this will damage your oprod.... this is what i have picked up from reading posts from the guys who know these things. This applies to all M14 type rifles regardless of manufacture. I've heard about customizing the gas plug to have a adjustable gas bleed off, like what is availlable for the garand..... but i'm not to informed on that

Better to lose your nuts then your eyes,or face. You can live with out your nuts just ask the married guys.Insert chuckle and knowing smile here.

Funny....I was all jacked up about getting mine from Marstar. Since it came its been out once and had 20 rnds through it. Heck, I haven't even greased it as per SkullBoys sticky.
I guess I'm waiting for Hungry to do his cross country tour so I can take it to the seminar and verify that all is good on it.
Then its ready for deer season.

Better not to lose either. If I really thought that there was a problem, a plan featuring a head-space gauge, tire and a long string could come into play. As for the married life emascuation, you could very well have a point.
