Just giving my new Shorty M305 the once over... packaged in 2013, and as I look at the front sight it's adjusted over to the right...not all the way... and it looks like it is staked into position??

Thoughts? Anyone else in the same boat? why would they do this?

It's not leaning right or left, barrel looks properly indexed... etc.

If your happy that its a safe gun to shoot, I would send a couple down range and see where they are hitting.
Might be just fine the way it is.
Could just be the kid who put the allen screw in missed with the hammer :))

I was at P&D looking at M305s on Saturday. About half had the sights on the right hand portion and staked in place, and about half had the sights more to the left and staked in place. One looked like it had the sight in the center.

I'm really not sure of the significance of it, or if someone was just putting on sights and staking them wherever they ended up.

Some of the norinco flash hiders the sight base sits off level due to improper alignment in the way the splines are cast and the sight could be right or left to compensate for the way the sight base is canted ... Or that's just how it was thrown together , on my 2012 shorty I replaced the flash hider and put the Nork sight blade on it centre I still have the original FH in good condition and it seems to be a good one with proper splines

I have a 2012 Norc and I replaced the front sight with a USGI one and it makes one hell of a difference, and its relatively easy to switch out. tho I also replaced the Flash Suppressor.

well ill be damned, my 2011 front sight is staked too. sight is shifted to the right, but barrel is over indexed, so the whole sight assembly is leaning left.... I dont get why they would stake it, the screw is there to keep it in place

I looked at 6 that came in to a local shop. Two looked good, two had the front sight base leaning a lot to the left and two had the front sight leaning noticeably to the left. I did a bit of checking and what I've been told is that the barrels are not over-indexed, the flash hider/front sight base have bores that aren't machined correctly. For instance, on one post I read a guy said he had one like that, switched the flash hider to a GI and the problem went away.

You sir... Are awesome.

Now.... Back on topic

I'm sure someone has the correct info... They have been out for a while now... I'm sure I'm not the first to notice it.
Keep in mind I just unboxed it today... Be interesting to see how dialed in it is at the range.

Mines not staked. weird.

Hi guys

Well I just had a look at my three longs , all three have been staked at some point in time . I never noticed ,,,, lol
Sorry not the best pic's

First pic , from right to left 2007 , 2009 , 2012
Second pic , 2012 , looks like the sight has been moved from the stake point ..??

:bangHead:

literally every norc ive seen and owned has a staked front sight, i think they are adjusted so the sight is sitting centered over the bore? ( because the flash hiders come from that many different out of spec molds ) i could be wrong

I am no expert, but from I have read and seen they were staked based on a bore sighting.

My front sight was also on the complete right side (looking at it from the muzzle) and its a 2012.

I thought my barrel was underindexed or that i would need to move the sight back to the middle but...

After 80 rounds and barely having to move my rear right, it was fine.

And mine was not staked.

Well thanks for all the info on this... just curious to see what purpose of this staking was and I will follow up with a quick range report within a weeks time. That was a pretty good burn too L42A1... lol.

On a side note... after owning a Norc from 2004... in the years since the quality has certainly improved in almost all aspects of this 2012 rifle. I can see why there will be a price increase in the near future.
