New M305, Front sight question w/pic

"...built by a high-school shop class..." Forced labour.
"...why would they do this?..." They don't want the rifles coming out of the container with no front sight. Staking isn't hard to fix, but it does take some fortitude. Involves a hammer and a brass punch, usually.

Hi guys , first off all three are Long 22 inch M305's , no shortie in the bunch , Yes it looks taller and is taller , good Eye .

No worries about chewing up the dirt with this one , it's over gone a make over and has a 4 X 12 ,,,40 MM scope on it now .

If the weather holds , I will have it out this weekend for it's first dance .

the other two shot well at 100 yards , iron sites 3 inch groups over all , did tweak the gas system and tighten everything up /

The new shipment in at Mar may be the answer to some of the past issues ,, as per their statement ..

We know we are later than some other dealers in offering these BUT we had to address some production issues
BUT I think you will agree the delay was well worth it....

Anyone get one of these babies , let us know what you think and lots of pictures !

:cheers:cou::cheers:

I have an unrelated question. Where does a guy get another one of those alan screws that hold the nut under the flash hider in place lol?

Mistake?

Just when I want to buy one of these things, I come back to this forum and the urge goes away. Guess I'll just keep eating KD 'til I can afford an M1A.

So... The verdict is that a new flash hider/sight base clears this problem up? I bought a 2013 full sized and the sight is moved as far over as possible and staked. Makes me think if they could have gone further with it they would have... But if its accurate from that position I prob won't care.

I bought one of the M305s and took it back as the barrel was over indexed.
The M305 was also lacking in a manufactures name and country of origin, which were a concern to me.

Mine is staked as well.

Here is what my theory is based on the observations of my rifle. (This is only a theory)

The Flash Hider (FH) was installed and welded on crooked/canted/rotated by Chinese Guy #1. Chinese Guy #2 that installs the Sight on the flash hider notices that Chinese Guy #1 welded the FH on crooked (DOH!) so he adjusts the sight all the way to one side and stakes it to compensate for Chinese Guy #1's mistake.

#1 INLINE - This is what the FH & Sight should look like if installed on the end of the barrel properly and inline.

#2 FH CANTED - This is what the FH & Sight will look like if installed canted (rotated 8 degrees CCW).

#3 SIGHT ADJUSTED - This is what the Sight will look like after being adjusted and staked because the FH is canted (rotated 8 degreess CCW).

I am not a Gunsmith or an expert and this is just my theory from what I see on my rifle. What are your thoughts?

Great diagrams above but you are not considering that barrels are over and under indexed. I believe this is one of the main causes. For instance my sight is pushed to the left and the barrel is over indexed, which makes sense. Not sure if the FH is right or just aligned with the index. I guess it depends on if they install barrel 1st or the FH

I have read in other threads people talking about over and under indexed barrels but I don't understand what exactly that means? Can you or someone clarify exactly what that means or even better show some pics or diagrams?

I have read all the sticky's on the M305, which have been extremely helpful and did notice that my rifle had a few issues, for example the operating rod does not line up perfectly with the gas piston, which from what I can see is due to the operating guide being incorrectly installed crooked/canted/rotated as well.... perhaps Chinese Guy #1 installs operating guides and flash hiders.

I really want to learn as much as I can about this rifle now that I own one. Unfortunately I missed the M14 Clinic in Calgary this past July because I was getting married but I am really looking forward to another next year.

Here is a picture of the flash hider/front sight looking directly down the barrel. You can see how the bayonet mount and the gas plug do not line up exactly and how the front sight is adjusted. (it is not easy to get a picture like this)

Here is a picture of my barrel, is it properly indexed? If not which part needs to be at 6:00?
