Hey guys, I recently purchased a new (2013 mfg date) M305, i wasnt able to inspect it as much as id like to have in the store (damn cosmoline Packaging) and When i got it home, after cleaning all the cosmoline i looked down the sights and noticed my front sight canted towards my left. does this mean my barrel was over tightened or could it be that the flash hider was mounted crooked?

The canted sight might indicate that the barrel is over-indexed, or it could mean the flash hider was mounted offset or the sight itself was malformed. On a properly indexed barrel the gas vent should be at exactly 6 o'clock. To test for this insert a 5/20 mag, lock the bolt to the rear, put the butt on the ground, and check to make sure that the barrel, gas block and magazine all line up. If you have a small drill bit or allen key that will fit in the gas vent, push it through and into the barrel gas vent hole, then make sure that it lines up with the magazine.

I put a drill bit into the gas vent and it looks to be over tightened just the slightest. is this going to be a safety concern? and i imagine this will be a fix for a gunsmith?

It's only a safety concern if the headspace is overly tight or if the barrel developed a crack while being tightened. Assuming neither of those problems occurred your best bet would be to either leave it as is or send it to a gunsmith that works with M-14s, unless you're confident in your ability to do it yourself (lots of how-to's available).

Ok, well as much as i'd like to say i could do this myself. im gonna play it safe and let a professional do it. anybody know any good gunsmiths that work on m14's in the edmonton area?

I just did a re-index job for a CGNutter in QC, and another CGNutter in Interior, BC. :D Boxing it up, driving to Postal Outlet, mailing to and from, my trip to postal outlet 2X and unboxing things will all take MUCH longer than the 5 minutes it takes me to sort this out. :)

Or you could send it to many of the gunsmiths who are board sponsors/dealers here already!

Cheers and keep helping all the nooobs you can!
