New M305s binding operating rod and misaglined rod guide and piston - Help?

Update:

Finally got my M305 running like top. No failures to cycle since I discovered the problem.

The fix: over-indexing the barrel.

The problem: My theory is that Norinco over-torques their barrels to make it difficult enough to remove to satisfy some importation law requiring non-removable barrels. So, in order to have properly aligned gas cylinders they make them to sit canted slightly to the 7 o'clock position to align properly on over indexed barrels. I believe this because both of my Norc gas cylinders were misaligned (at 7 o'clock) on my neutrally indexed barrel. I removed the barrel, relieved material between the receiver and shoulder until I could over-index the barrel. Now, since my barrel has been over indexed I haven't had a single failure with my original Norc gas cylinder.

So, something to consider; with these Norcs it's more important to have a properly aligned gas cylinder then a neutrally indexed front sight. If the gas cylinders are as canted as mine both are, you can't have both the cylinder and front sight neutrally indexed. A neutrally indexed gas cylinder is critical to allowing the rifle to cycle, and the front site alignment comes 2nd to this.

Conclusion: Neutrally indexed front sights on 2013 Norc M305 is possibly a bad situation, if the gas cylinder is not neutrally indexed as well (likely not the case out of the box). An 11 o'clock front sight indexing = flawless cycling.

Glad all is well. This thread serves as a good learning tool. Welcome to Norinco quality control where all bets are off. Lately I've been upgrading some cgnutter's rifles with Springfield Armory parts and I have found all their parts to be consistent. It's refreshing to work with consistent fitting parts once again. :)

I'm grateful that their parts are available unlike Norinco parts that are scarce and have sharp edges to hurt my soft teacher hands. :nest:

Cheers and keep helping them noobies

Thanks again Barney and everyone else who helped me along the way to fix my M305. Took me several months and more then a few times I gave up for a while but I knew this rifle would be a shooter and eventually I fell on the solution through good old trial and error. I figured it's a good idea to update you guys in case another M305 newbie comes around with a similar issue and this thread can help them work theirs out too. This rifle has been pure joy since I got the fitting of everything just right. Worth the wait and now I need to see what she can really do!

Next step is a mount/scope project. Irons still work well enough for 100m but I have a feeling this rifle can really reach out...
