Maybe a Phony?
When I lived in Edmonton, there was a gunsmith trying to flog off a French FR F2 sniper rifle. If I recall, he wanted seven thousand dollars for it. I noted that the optics did not match the rifle, and the barrel shroud did not look right.
I learned later that the same guy was using Norinco parts and putting then into battle- weary Galil rifles and selling them as authentic Galils. I saw one of these Galils and immediately knew it was phony. The salesman told me it was an authentic Galil, and tried to make a fraudulent sale. I should have reported it to the cops.
Long story short, I heard this crooked gunsmith later admit the F2 was made in his back room, pieced together from a MAS 36, and other pieces he improvised. If I recall, he said the barrel shroud was made with fiberglass, modeled on a picture of the F2 he found in a book. He said there was nothing wrong in doing this, and it was merely a case of “buyer beware.”
I hope your friend did not get suckered by this lowlife.

Don't need to. The factory center feed mag is really good.
Now to wait for the US aftermarket to start making 10rds mags. Likely later this season as shooters get their hands on their LE rifles and go WOW.
If someone is handy with a TIG, they can splice on a body extension and have one right now. The M14 spring or similar could be put in.

Converting mags into the Savage wouldn't be that tough. The new center feed mag system has everything in that bottom plate so you can modify existing mags to fit or modify the plate to work with the mag.
Still not worth it as the new mags are superb. Think almost AI smooth, gonzy overbuilt bottom plate and mag box all for $45.
The best deal in factory tacky mag systems right now.

Because it is an LE model, I'd doubt we'd see one in left anythime soon..However, I have seen rifles that were southpawed that weren't supposed to be..
