I received an email today from MDT regarding a new metal AI pattern mag for the 223 that allows rounds of up to 3.055" OAL.

This is a really big deal for 223 shooters as we can now run heavy bullets in the 88 to 95 grain range seated out as far as we want.

The biggest limitation for 223 has always been short seating depths driven by short mags. This reduces powder capacity, lowers velocity and makes it hard to shoot accurate groups with low ES.

Now we can throat our repeating 223 bolt guns the same way its been done for F Class for 20 years. OAL needs to be over 2.6" with heavy bullets and better closer to 2.640" and now it's possible with repeaters.

Previously I have always had to mill the inserts from an Accurate Mag AI Pattern mag for 223.

I cant wait to try these.

EDIT: Sorry Guys...

Looks like only 2.5" OAL max... False alarm.

10-Round Magazines for .223:

3.055” Outside Length
3.90" Rear Height (same height as MDT 10-rd .308 metal magazines)
2.50” max cartridge overall length (COAL)
Polymer feedlip inserts extend ~0.5" past the end of the metal feedlip backer, thus retaining the round longer, helping ensure the tip of the round has entered the chamber before the rear of the round is released.

Need to take a close look at how they did this and establish how difficult it will be to mod the mag to feed longer OAL.

3.055" doesn't sound right, thats the external length of their other short action metal AICS mags. Did you misquote their internal COAL #? Looks like I havent received a newsletter from them since May, so I need to renew my subscription.
Would be nice to have something that allowed for 2.65-2.7", provided it fed well.

Aw man, you had my hopes up. I ended up switching to a baby 6 rather than a off-standard 223. It doesn't use much more power, 30gr instead of 25gr.

While I have yet to buy one of the MDT magazine... I was quite surprised by the difference in acceptable OAL between the AI and Accurate Mag

Loaded with some Prvi 55gr

Your point is valid Mike, but the plastic AI mag on the left would be very difficult to modify to allow longer rounds to feed.
The mag on the right is really quite easy to modify, since the plastic inserts can be removed and separated.

I would be interested to see the new metal MDT mag for 223 and establish if it can be easily modified.

The left mag is a AI.
- Funny how until a few weeks ago, I had kind of forgot about the Accurate Mag  it had somehow ended up in the 308 magazines pouch...

Tks for the video! I'll keep that in mind if I ever get the urge to reload something heavier than the 69gr I usually shoot with.

The MDT 223 mag has a similar construction as the Accurate. I am able to run my rounds inside the 2.50 OAL so have not tried to modify for more OAL. I expect you could modify it but can not say if it will compromise the function of the mag. I have been running the crab out of these mags and have been loving them. With the extended feed lips the present rounds better to the chamber.
Cheers

Can you take an MDT mag apart and post some pics for us Ryan?
