Hey Everyone,
I just completed the CFSC/CFRSC this weekend with my old man. Our instructor, who was great, mentioned this site as a place to check out for getting more info and learning at large. I look forward to going through the various forums and pages here.
Visiting my 92 year old grandfather in Kapuskasing this past Thanksgiving was the inspiration for getting the safety courses booked and completed with my dad so we could work towards PAL and hunting license, with the goal of all 3 of us going hunting for partridge next Thanksgiving. My grandfather in his time I'm told was an incredible hunter. He was/is a coureur de bois, he left home at 15 in the '40s to work in "the bush" cutting trees for the pulp and paper mills in the North. He was an avid outdoorsman/fisherman as well, belonging to a generation nearly lost to time. He will pass eventually and I know its become important to my dad and I for his guns to stay in the family, alongside making some incredible memories hopefully in the time left with him (he's in great shape for 92 and still going out to shoot Partridge on his own haha).
My first shots were with my Uncle at his club range south of Northbay. He instilled some good habits in me and the basic familiarities and recall paid off for sure in the testing through this weekend. He is very pumped to have a couple more people in the family that will be able to own firearms.
Shooting bb guns etc growing up was never that fun to me cause I was a crappy shot. It was only until a year or so ago, when at the range with my Uncle he figured out I was actually a lefty. From there my gosh target shooting has gotten a lot more fun with my aim improving remarkably. These core functional experiences of range shooting and figuring out some basic marksmanship, alongside the familial feeling of gun ownership tradition on my Dad's side of the family has built up quite a strong passion through the past 3 years now. I am really looking forward to growing further now that I can work towards owning my own firearm once PAL is applied for and all set up.
Most of the firearms i have shot thus far have been my uncles, at the range, and include single and double action revolvers and semi auto pistols. I have a variety of rifles as well (was so green at the time i cant recall calibre and makes etc). Out on crown land this past thanksgiving with my old man and Grandpa we shot the .410 break action shotgun my Grandpa has and still hunts partridge with. He has some other rifles as well but im unsure of their calibre - i believe .306/.308 for Moose hunting back in the day.
Thank you for reading if you have made it this far ill wrap up by putting my ideas for first firearms out for comments, or maybe thats best done on another thread/area entirely so feel free to just comment that but from my research I want to start with a .22LR Rifle, thinking precision rimfire.. this is due to cheap ammo and relatively good bang for your buck firearm for first rifle to get better at shooting and very comfortable with firearm (ill be doing mainly target practice) and for shotgun i am considering Mossberg 500 .410 pump action. I like the Turkey edition to get the red optic scope and that choke for as well for tighter shot option.
Thanks again and im looking forward to connecting with others on this site!
Cheers
