So just recently got my hands on a nice springfield m1a, 1980s vintage and I am looking for some recommendations from the m14 crowd.

What's a decent sling for this rifle or should I just roll with a canvas or leather 1942 style sling like on my m1 garand?

Looks to get my hands on some extra used 5/20 or 5/10 mags so if anyone wants to part with a few, shoot me a pm. Barring that where can new ones be had for a decent price?

Lastly I am looking for a good scope mount that holds zero and still allows for use of the iron sights, any recommendations?

Can't wait to get her out to the bush and hit some steel.

If you want a great carry sling the Slogan Outdoors magnum.

If you want a sling as a shooting aid Tab Gear has some excellent choices.

For scope mount that holds zero well and allows iron sight use I'd recommend Sadlak.

I run a padded VCAS sling on mine and have an ARMS 18 scope mount. Highly recommend both.

Welcome to the club. VCAS and Arms 18 are also what I'd choose if I had your requirements. Just be aware that depending on how your rifle throws brass, you might encounter some jamming if the brass hits the scope mount.

If it jams, just look up how to disassemble your bolt and trim the ejector spring although I believe that is generally an issue with Norc's and not so much with an SAI of your vintage as I'mm assuming it should be all USGI bits.

I ran a Norc with an Arms 18.
Swapped the bolt internals with usgi and still had stovepipe issues.
I prefer the lower mount but would go with a Casm next time.

Thanks for the input guys. Got my hands on a vcas sling off the EE for a good price so I am going to try it first. Looking into the recommended mounts as well. I am not sure yet how well this rifle can shoot. Hoping to set it up for 3-450 meter shooting. We will see how she does with irons this weekend.

Yes it does seem to be all usgi parts. Only issue I can see is the plastic hand guard is cracked.

For a handguard you may look at Brownells or TreelineM14. Or maybe a railed handguard from Ultimak or M14.ca? Receiver scope mount can be finicky, even the best like Sadlak and ARMS. You may save trouble with a barrel mount or a CASM.

You can get 5/10 mags from Brownells and SAI webstore. They're not advertised as 5/10 but as a "long" 5 rounder.
For 5/20 the latest USGI are made by CMI. With patience you can find a 5-mag package deal at CTCS, Wolverine or others.

Did you learn it all about the M14? There's a lot to know, this forum stickies is a good start. Have fun.

Your only real choice here is the A.R.M.S. #18 scope base, or the Promag knock-off.
If you have alignment issues, you may need to have a gunsmith fit it correctly.

Check out the all weather Biothane sling that Turner Saddlry sells ...really good sling.
Arms 18 mount is the way to go for a scope mount....I had to clip a few coils off of the extractor and ejector springs though to stop rounds being caught by the bolt.

If there is an alignment issue with the arms 18 mount....install it without the c clip that holds the side receiver bolt in place. If you still have an alignment issue Burris signature Zee rings have offset inserts that will allow you to correct this easily.

Thanks for the info.

I am familiar with it but haven't really delved too in depth yet. I have had a m1 garand for a number of years, so I have some knowledge due to their similarities. Will be working my way through the various stickies as I get into the rifle more.

Seems like the arms 18 is the way to go. I noticed a few on the EE that were modified to be split. Machined to have some of the rails removed. Should I stay away from these?

The ARMS18 were "splitted" when they started to manufacture them long ago. They changed their design, probably to protect the scope from brass and to provide more mounting options. The early splitted models are usually rare and appreciated.
If a newer rail was machined to be split by a user, that would be turn-off.

The pro-mag knock offs are actually pretty good, they are "split" style....

Mystic precision (site sponsor) is a dealer.... Priced around $140 last I checked....
