I don't usually come on here so this may have been talked about.

Apparently the .223 that was a good round in Viet Nam may not be the best for the job in Iraq and such places. So a new military round the 6.8mm Rem. SPC has been developed. A .270 cal. on a shortened .30 rem case with an altered shoulder. 115 gr. FMJ at ~ 2800 fps.

"RIFLE SHOOTER" magazine had a good write up on it.

To anyone who reads AR15.com, this is far from news. It seems to be fairly popular with American civilian AR-15 shooters, although its future potential in military use is debatable.

I'd be interested to know if there's anyone in Canada using it, or any companies bringing in ammunition, components or AR-15 parts for it.
 
Duffy... this has been known for very long time. LW and other notable rifle manufacturers already have models utilizing this round.

You can already get commercial rifles in this caliber - including a Remington 700
 
6.8mm is going nowhere fast. It is a solution to a problem that does not really exist. If you want better terminal effects with 5.56mm you can change the projectile. If you want long range effects, change the platform. Both solutions have been adopted and far more economically that by adopting a new service round.
 
If you're looking for something different... Higginsons' now has 6.8SPC dies, brass and bullets. We can get 6.8 16" barrels/bolts/uppers ($955)/completes/mags on two weeks notice. Model is Stag Arms 5R/5L.
 
why cant we update the ak design with more accuarcy, and give it to our boys with the 7.62 loaded nice and hot? seems to me alot of problems could be solved with less money required for research.

What is the advantage of a heavier platform, heavier ammo, and no change in effectiveness?
 
because its already been done! somthing thats already proven to work and no need to research somthing new and spend millions, besides when we find a cache of taliban ammo, we will shoot em with thier own weapons. free ammo!!!

I need the room in my ammo locker that the 200 6.8spc are taking up :runaway:

i just say eat whats already infront of you instead of turning your nose up and and cooking somthing else. if the 5.56 isnt enough, well use the 7.62, its already in production.

It was good enough to serve for better than 30 years on their front line and is going strong every where ak's have showed up. There would be a benifit to Spec Op groups behind lines operations, ammo commonallity and ease of resupply (shoot a arab, take his ammo). Personally I'd just as soon not get shot with it. They went to lighter calibers for the same reason we did, increase the infantry ammo load with no weight penalty, not due to the round being poor, arguably it's a better choice than 7.62X51 for most infantry applications.
