New moose gun

Looking at getting a new gun for moose hunting this year just wondering what everyone uses/ suggested currently shooting a savage model 111 30.06 but was considering something in a 300 short mag any suggestions?
 
I would seriously suggest upgrading the gun and staying with the 30-06. The 06 is more than enough cartridge for any animal Ontario has to offer and make it just as dead just as fast as any of the magnums without the extra recoil and expense.

I' am very partial to Winchester M-70's as I have used them all my adult hunting life. But there are many other brands that will serve you well. Like Sako, Browning, Kimber. Best go to a several gun shops and handle some various brands to see what you like and what feels right to you.
 
been using Longbranch Lee, for few years, but finding bullets has become a chore. i just got a .300WM from my brother that needs some work done and will be my moose gun till i can come up with $ for Rem 700 in 30-06
I feel confident in 30-06, don't see a need for extra punch with magnum, it only adds up to the cost of the whole experience
 
Just looking for something new mainly, happy with what I've got its never let me down just thinking of adding a new rifle to the collection and hace read good things about the .300wsm
 
I replaced my 30-06 with a Browning carbon fiber X-bolt in 300wsm and have never regretted it once. I liked the feel and handling of the rifle so much that I ended up using it during deer season more than my Rem 700 25-06.
 
If you already have a .30-06, the move to the .300 WSM is a sideways move, and not worth the bother in terms of game taking ability. If you want another rifle, I would suggest something more "different" from the -06 would make for a more interesting rifle.
 
I don't think the WSM would be a sideways step at all. More power than the 06 in a short action is very attractive. Winchester Model 70 Extreme Weather SS would be my preference or a Sako 85 Finnlight.
 
Consider the ever popular 338 wm in a 116 stainless. No pussycat and very effective and has been since its inception. Also, consider the reloading costs, availability of ammo when (not if) you leave home and forget the ammo box, and potential for the flavour of the day to wane on new cartridges. That being said I have a 300wsm. Its a fine shooter and will get the job done, like the 300wms I have had in the past.

If it twer me...I'll keep the 338wm near for moose and large bear, and have the ol 06 near by to get the job done too. The main point is to master the recoil generated by these magnums in a light to carry rifle under a hunting situation. If you are twitchy....stick with the 06 and it will not let you down.

I bought a 300 WSM several years ago for Moose. I reload 180gr Nosler Accubonds and Barnes TTSX and have nice groups with either bullet. I can't say I've actually shot at a Moose but kind of like to think if I hit a Moose in the right spot it'll end up in the back of the truck. :)
 
Nothing wrong with a 300wsm. I almost bought one because WSS had $600 Thompson Ventures on half price... They sold out before payday though...

If I way to pick, I would be tempted to go with the regular 300wm over the short mag though. Yeah, you get a shorter, handier rifle with the WSM, but you don't really get the magnum performance from the WSM with the heavy 30cal pills, which is what I would want to be using in a 300mag (200s specifically)...

If you wanna shoot 180gr faster, or go with a 150gr TSX at ludicrous velocity, then the wsm is a great choice. If you want to be able to throw more weight than your 30-06, then the regular win mag is the better option IMO.

Have you bought a new gun yet? Checkout the 338-06 thread. Super interesting calibre for sure! I'd also checkout the 35 Whelen in addition to what others have said.

As far as the rifle depending on budget and fit I'd be looking at the Sako Finnlight (love mine), Kimber Mountain Ascent, or maybe even Weatherbys Vangaurd SS.

I cannot believe that some are discouraging the OP to keep what he got...

The more the merrier :)

Note: .30-06 is the perfect all rounder, but if it is lonely in the safe - get yourself that .300
 
With moose as the target species, I would look at cartridges with larger bore diameter rather than more velocity if I wanted something more powerful than 30-06. Personally, I would look for a 35 Whelen instead of a 300 win mag, as an example. But to each their own.

Can't see a problem with your current gear unless the equipment is giving you problems.
Hitting a barn door sized animal at 100 yds or less is the basic qualifying criteria for a moose hunting firearm.
Seen plenty of moose taken with a mod 94 thutty thutty with irons.
 
Just made the change from a remington pump 7600 .30-06 to a Browning x-bolt 300 WSM. What an awesome rifle! Very accurate. If you already have a .30-06 why would you want a second one? Variety is the spice of life. We don't buy rifles to save money!!
