For $1000 you can get a sportered Lee Enfield with a Weaver K4 that will last your lifetime of moosehunting, and about $800 in change which I expect will last not quite as long.
 
I see a Remington 700LS in .300Winchester Magnum at Epps for 663.00. I see those SPS's for cheaper but I'm not keen on them. There are many good ,budget priced N/A made rifle's in 300WM or even 300WSM.

Top it with an Elite 3200 3x-9x or equivalent, a good set of mounts and bases, and you have a nice all- around Moose Rifle for the Rock. Should come in under 1000.

It will double as a long range caribou rifle for you as well. I use the 7mmRM, and always considered the .338WM if I decided on a dedicated moose rifle, but I think the .300, with it's excellent factory ammo choices readily avaliable in most local area's, would be a great addition to any moose hunters gun cabinet.

It's taking the '06 and adding 125-150 yds to whatever it will do.:)
 
Both X-Bolt and T3 are good hunting rifles - accurate, smooth and durable. They are light and easy to carry.

If you really want a 338 Fed then get one. Otherwise anything from .270, 308 and 30-06 would do the trick. Ammo is plenty and inexpensive.

You don't need anything "more powerful". The last bull moose I shot was over 500 yards with a T3 in .308 with 165 gr. TSX bullet.

I got my moose in area 36 Southern shore With a .30-06 Tikka t3 Battue lite. I mounted a 3x9x40mm scope and fired a 180 grain hornady. Snaped a rib and took out a lung.
