Went out on the long weekend and did some elementary shooting with two new Mosins. The M44 was purchased about Christmas time from P&S for 175 bucks, and the only thing I did not get with it was a package and a certificate saying that is was brand new from the fatory and never been fired. The M91/30 came from Westrifle last week as a Westrifle Combo of rifle and ammo for $250. This was simply a $110 rifle special with a good deal on ammo, in this case, 200 rounds of MFS in 203 gr Soft Point. For those who've missed out on the awesome deal on M44s at P&S for 175 bucks, you still have time to grab a Mosin 91/30 in almost perfect shape from Westrifle. Both Rifles are in great shape, and I kid you not, you will pick these out of the bunch to show your buddies how good condition these rifles are in.

Both rifles never been shot by meyself, after some quick adjustments I put some quick groups at 75 yards with a single point rest. Although I corrected/adjusted for elevations of the rifles/ammo, these were true groups using Russian Surplus 150gr fmj, and 203gr soft points MFS ammunition also from Russia. Note the difference in groups, all cold shots shots.

My standard choice of open sight shooting is at 50 or 75 yards. My personal eye correction is best at 50 yards as the front sight becomes wider than the target at longer ranges. (.5 inch group is 1 MOA@50 yards)

Whats with the two barrel bands on the carbine? Also, I can promise you both rifles have indeed been fired at some point in time :p Very nice rifles!

Thats a good eye you have. The second band is actually a heavy cable wrap/tie strap because there is a flaw in the wood from packing crate damage. I've not decided how to correct the flaw, but the cable tie holds it together for now. I meant , newly fired by me and not sighted.

Nice-looking shooting sticks !

I was pleasantly surprised to discover the bolt-action on some 91/30's was far slicker than I'd been led to believe a Mosin ever could be.....

BTW :) , good shooting ! :yingyang:

with a good bolt polishing the mosin action is super slick

They are nice shooting sticks. The first dozen rounds I fired from them since they were in grease, were already on the target at 50 yards. The 91/30 needed a slight tap on the front sight to center the shots, but shoots about 8 inches high with the bayonet removed. In all fairness to the 91/30, I was aiming at the bottom of the target and should reshoot these groups with a front post extension to correct the elevation. That said, however the groups were still reasonable, and about have the size for the soft point MFS ammo. Oddly, the 203gr groups show higher than the 150gr fmj. I would rather have a bigger target next time where I can aim center for both bullets. The action was a bit stiff at first and did not like Czeck surplus ammo, it seemed to stick and not want to eject the empty case. I had no issues at all with the Russian surplus or the MFS ammo. Later when I have more time, I'll get a chamber brush into there and give it a better scrub.

The East German M44 was dead on center with the first few rounds and its elevation was perfect at 75 yards with bayonet removed. I made no windage adjustments to the sights, this puppy was shooting dead on, and consequently is a bit of a flame thrower. The bolt has a silky smooth action and handles fast. Same thing with the MFS soft points, groups were improved over the surplus loads.

All in all, both rifles shoot well and are good rifles for hunting with lots of take down power. For those that hand load bullets, we can get the groups sizes to half of what I shot on these targets. My own observation for custom loading, is that a .312 bullet almost always shoots better in any 7.62x54R rifle, whether new condition or warn.

Nice to hear that your M44 is shooting good right out of the box. I'm hoping mine will be the same. I haven't had a chance to get it or my new 91/30 out yet. I'm almost positive that I'll have to raise the front sight post on the 91/30.
How's the recoil on the M44?

Recoil on the M44 was not really different than the 91/30, other than it shoots a big flame. A normal sized adult should have no problems to let off 40 or 60 rounds before the shoulder gets tender. I wasn't sure where the M44 was going to shoot with the bayonet off, but it has perfect elevation for about 75 yards with the 150 gr surplus. The 200 gr soft points were lower, but if I had more time ( pending thunder storm caused a quick and premature clean up) I would like to have shot another set and played with the rear sight increments. I think one notch would have lifted the 200gr groups up to center.

I use a small piece of heat shrink tubing, placed over the front post of the 91/30 to give the extra millimeter of height. its quick , easy, can be adjusted or removed in a few seconds.

Cant wait to get out again, I have some homeloads in .312 to test out. I'm finding that the larger diameter of .312 works better in every single 7.62x54 that I've tried, whether the rifle was perfect condition or poor and warn out.

Beautiful rifles, and good shootin too! I myself am looking for a decent Mosin. Especially a shorty one like yours. Don't know much about them though..

I have a trades ad up in milsurp EE if anyone is interested. Looking to trade my Tapco SKS for a decent Mosin.

Looks like you had a blast man! :)

Jump on the deals from Westrifle. It doesn't get any better. Once you find and shoot a decent 91/30, you can take all the time you want to find a M44 Carbine. Same bullet, same fun.
