New Mossberg 590S Barrel Issues

Hey Everyone,

Just got a new Mossberg 590S from Cabelas. When I inspected the barrel I noticed what looked like some gouges in the barrel near the chamber and about 4/5ths of the way down the barrel. I scubbed the barrel down with hoppes and a brass and steel brush but the marks were still there.

I took it to a gunsmith who just said it was a tactical make so not to expect anything great from the finish. The mossberg American people said the barrel is fine, but the Mossberg Canadian people want me to send it in to inspect. Does anyone have any insight here into what these marks are, or if they are something to worry about.

On my borescope they look like small rough patchers where the polish didn't reach down to the surface, with raised polished bits.

I have an 870 Police here that came from the factory with a barrel that was not polished. I could stick my little finger down the muzzle and feel the rough tool marks.

That barrel was prone to excessive leading when shooting slugs. But it was shooting 4 inch groups at 100 meters with Foster slugs. So, I did not want to get rid of it ...

After many cleaning sessions with a cleaning rod mounted to a drill and some fine steel wool .... those tool marks are gone .... and the inside is polished now.

My suggestion ... if that barrel shoots well .... keep it and polish it yourself ...

Pictures might help determine how marred it is but +1 on seeing how it shoots first, if it shoots slugs & buckshot well I’d polish it myself with a drill and a 12g brush wrapped in steel wool. Probably the same thing the maker will do and your not waiting around for them to do it without a barrel, really would depend on how big/deep the marks are. It’s a smooth bore so it might foul easier but, it might not.

I’m in the camp of a new gun should pass fit, finish and qc expectations of a brand new gun. If it was a used gun I might not be as concerned about it, have you talked to Cabelas about it?

I can tell you now Cabelas is all sales final on guns and ammo . They will direct you to the manufacture for any warranty issues .

Just checked the one I picked up last week from Cabelas and it looks fine.
There are some touch ups with what looks like black paint on the back side of the receiver which I didn't notice when I bought it and not happy about.
