i really like shooting muzzleloaders. right now i have a lil rossi break action with a bushnell 3x9x40. i like it but its a tad heavy and im hvaing a problem with crudsticking to the action and making the hammer hard to #### and the action release hard to press.

so i was thinking of selling the gun and maybe buying a new one.

i was thinking of a CVA Optima Pro 209 Magnum Thumbhole Rifle - Nickel/Mossy Oak

or

a t/c omega.

i would like a reliadble gun one that wont get crud stuck to it like on the rossi

whats the upside to the nickel barrel over stainless? i would like any opinions on both please. this will be my home deer rifle. thanx alot

Try a real muzzleloader with the hammer on the side. LOL I really have no idea about the rifle you are using, but there must be some way of cleaning the hammer area. I use a traditional style rifle that has filled the freezer for the past 14 years, and still works as good as the day I got it. The guys I know using modern style muzzleloaders are using Remingtons, or Knights and like them.

also has anyone tried a new remington genesis 50 cal?
the seem pretty nice but i heard the old ones were crap.

I had a go with flinters too and they are not my cup of tea. I have 2 Lyman cap locks. One is a Deerstalker in .50 and the other is a Trade rifle in .54. The Remington Genisis is made in Spain by the same outfit that makes Traditions. The report I read on them was not very good. The old Remington 700 is a much better rifle.

You guys must have missed this...:confused:
I would say he's look'n for an in-line;) :p On that note,your muzzleloader is near identical to the NEF Sidekick,but IMO on the cheaper side.Nickel barrels and Stainless are two different things,the nickel is a "finish' applied to the steel and of course SS is SS. Because blackpowder and Pyrodex are corrosive,the two mentioned finishes will not be affected as much than with blued steel.I'd stick with a muzzleloader made in Italy or the USA.
 
Snowshoe never mentioned "Flintlocks" He said "Try a real muzzleloader with the hammer on the side." in other words a "Cap Lock"

If your getting good groups, and are confident with your Rossi setup - keep it!! You can limit the crud factor by changing powders (777, clearshot, etc)

Muzzleloading is synonomous with CRUD. Getting dirty is half the fun.
 
If you want to greatly cut down on crud buy a Savage that uses smokeless powder. I know it isn't traditional but boy do they shoot well and cleaning is a breeze.
 
the only problem on my rossi is "blow back" ( i think thats what its called) and its super hard to clean becasue the trigger assembly is hard to take apart.

and i only use 777 powder. I dont mind the other messy parts of muzzleloading its just this is a big convience.
