New Nightforce - is this normal?

Bought my first Nighforce, an SHV 5-20. Beautiful scope, but one thing bothers me a little. The finish on the threads in front of the lense looks a bit worn, even though the scope is brand new and came in a sealed box. I don't have much experience with Nightforce optics - is this something that would be considered 'normal'?

I wouldn't think it would be anything to worry about? I have a nightforce scope on my 6.5CM savage rifle but I can't check it to see if it's the same as it's at a friends place getting new scope mounts installed

It looks like someone had screwed in the sunshade at one point...maybe in the factory? Maybe it was opened and resealed ar then store you bought it from....I personally wouldn't like that especially at the price point these are at.....I wanna be the first one to mark up my brand new scope not the factory......not the distributor....just my 2 cents

I wouldn't bat an eye at that. As noted, looks like sunshade was installed at some point... probably part of the QA process at the factory?

Would make zero difference to me...

Yeah, or perhaps if they thread it into some sort of device for checking the optics (QA/QC)

Anodize on fine threads like that has nothing to really hold onto, super easy to scratch it off the crest of the threads. Its most likely from assembly as locking rings / lens assembly is threaded on it and so on and there's a tool used to lock them in. Fact is that either way its absolutely nothing I'd care about, first time you do put a sunshade on it, it'll get worse, there's bigger things to worry about in life.

This!
First sensible reply on this thread.

For what it's worth I checked our display stock of Nightforce scopes and there are some marks on the threads and assembly notches on a couple of scopes but yours would be the most visible. From my experience it appears the assembly tool for the lens locking ring may have dragged on the leading edge of couple of external threads. I don't believe this to be a used or warranty return as Nightforce does not play this game. As noted threading in a sun shade will often do the same thing. Phil.

Phil and Sonny are spot on. We have sold quite a few Nightforce products and have met all major personal including the owner.
Nightforce has never sold a warranty return scope as new and one can only speculate why anyone would make these silly(polite wording) remarks.

Best regards,

Peter

Acrylic scale model paint, you have the choice between gloss black, semi-gloss black and flat black, Tamiya is a good brand.

And another thing, about two years ago I buy a scope with the same issue, I used hoppes 9 gun blue with very good result and the scope was made of aluminum not steel!

Just put a sunshade on it. Its very useful, looks cool, and never have to look at it again.
I wouldn't be putting paint or anything like that in there, if for any reason it ever had to be taken apart for warranty(even if its extremely unlikely), don't make their job harder.

if your in or around a UFA or ranch supply store, go in and get a " tag pen" looks like a felt marker, but the stuff will not come off. it is also weaver mount black on anything aluminum

I have a way better idea, just look through the other end of the scope, not only will the scope work way better, you will never see those tiny marks.

Black felt pen will "sort of work"but the results will be a purplish tone. Try to find some Alumiblack from Birchwood Casey. Phil.

Definitely will turn that purplish tone....played that game before many times....never will I use a permanent marker....it always just made things worse
