New Norinco questions

Just received a Norinco M14 Shorty, Curious if it may be under/over indexed, also curious to the sight placement?The op rod aligns somewhat but has alot of play where it sometimes does not line up as well as in the first image. here are a few images please if you have any help that would be great

Your oprod could be lined up better for sure, but it will still function fine as is.
Your barrel looks to be over indexed and needs to be backed out a tad.
Does the right side (from shooters perspective) of your oprod saddle contact the thick part of the barrel at all?
Check to see if there's rubbing, if it is then proper indexing should be done sooner than later.
Otherwise, it needs a tweaking but you can use it as is.
 
Thanks so much! So once I re index it I can centre my sites and start fresh? Also know a source for new rear sites? As the norinco ones are very sketchy the way they click and sometimes not click lol
 
The sight base on your flash hider is incorrectly cast/milled. It is severely canted. The allen screw that locks the flash hider castle nut in place should be aligned with the top open spline in your picture. This is a common QC issue. A new flash hider will help centre your front sight. It is difficult to tell if your barrel is over indexed from the pictures taken. Barrel is properly indexed if the gas port is aligned dead centre down relative to the receiver.

The op rod to gas cylinder alignment shown is actually very good. If the op rod has play check to see if the op rod guide is loose. This is another common QC issue and is very easy to fix.

many guys replace their rear irons with ones off a m1 garand or springfield m14. check the equipment exchange in the modern military rifle parts section....you'll often find them there. the front irons are usually ok once your barrel is properly indexed.
 
Replace your front site with a new 20$ one from brownells, the norc front site is milled on a visible angle in your pic the same as mine was. Also the alignment of the oprod to the gas piston can be fixed by preening the oprod guide and using red locktite. Your flash hider is most likely fine. When you order the front site don't forget to order a new set screw for it as the norc set screw is metric and will not fit the new one.
 
Thanks Tactical teacher , it was planned as a work project so I am not to concerned should be fun! thanks Turkinator i plan on peening it as well. Lots to do just will take time, thanks everyone for all the tips! anymore info would be great :)
 
The front sight is not the issue. The issue is that the flash hider has a poorly made base to put the front sight on. You definitely need a new flash hider.

Not necessarily, the Scout/Squad front sights are designed to work with shorty barrels but they have to be ordered directly from Springfield Armory. You might find that a standard 22" sight will still work with your rear sight bottomed out though (or close to it), of the four shorties I've had two worked fine with new 22" front sights and two didn't, so it's a bit of a gamble. If you want you can PM me your shipping address I'll send you a spare SA full-length NM front sight I've got kicking around. If it works with your rifle keep it and if it doesn't just send it back.

Based on the picture I agree. Even with a new front sight you're still going to need a new flash hider if you don't want it sitting at an angle.
 
I plan on switching out the flash hider, just wanted to know if i needed to upgrade the front sight and if so what options are out there for a front sight. i appreciate all the help guys!
 
The gas vent hole on a properly timed barrel should sit at exactly 6:00. A good way to do a rough eyeball check of this is to insert a 5/20 mag, lock your action to the rear and set the butt on the ground so the gas piston drops clear of the gas vents. Take an appropriately sized alan key or drill bit and insert through both gas vent holes (anything long enough to leave a couple of inches sticking out works fine). Then look straight down from the muzzle end and see if the alan key or drill bit is parallel to the magazine or if they seem to be at different angles. If they're parallel then your barrel is probably pretty close to right on.

I know from experience it is, my rear sight centred right up after installing the Springfield front sight blades. If you sit them both on the table next to each other the Nork front sight is very canted while the Springfield is dead level. It's clearly visible in the pic.
 
There are several issues that you MAY have with your Norc. Your barrel could be over indexed, your flash hider may be out of spec, or your sigh may be out of spec. First things first pull the gun apart and check the indexing by inserting an allen wrench / drill bil into your gas vent hole to make sure it is at the 6 o'clock position as Pop has stated. If it is indexed properly, then you need to have a look at your flash hider and or your sight as one or both may be out of spec. A quick question, Have you shot it yet? Once you shoot it you may even find out that you have to adjust your sights to get them lined up and you may have no issues (Other than the SH!TTY Norc rear sights). Either way its not overly serious and can be worked out. Tactical Teacher is a huge help if you have indexing issues, if you contact him he will point you in the right direction just PM him.

Hey Walleyed, I have not shot it just unpacked it, stripped it down and began the cleaning process. I will check all of these issues tonight and see where the major kinks are lol Either way i am pumped to start working and building on this platform, im a sucker for make work projects lol. Just curious when indexing how many of you guys just use a vise with wood jig or does everyone use the pre made metal jigs/vises?
 
There are a few guys around that will help you out that have barrel vises. I have one that is a bit out of index and I am struggling with buying a barrel, bolt and vise and redoing myself or getting one of the resident expert to help me out with such. Either way people are here to help!! I wouldn't try it without a barrel vise myself, but I will let other chime in who have maybe tried other options reply on this question.
