New NP29 Problems - More problems

Hi I took out my new NP29 today for a test run and put about 80 rounds of Rem UMC 147 Gr. through it and noticed a few problems.

1. I got 2 mags with it. One of the mags fits pretty tight and it won't drop free when I push the mag release. It drops down about 1 inch and I have to pull it the rest of the way out. The other one drops out no problem.

2. The last shot hold open only works about 1 in ten times. I noticed this after the second magazine and tested a bunch of times with only 1 or 2 rounds at a time. It doesn't seem to be magazine specific and if I rack the slide after the last shot it will stay locked back.

3. About 10 times, the ejected brass was 'caught' by the slide. The cartridge, usually at the bottom of near the primer, gets caught between the chamber and the slide after the shot.

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions. Maybe theres some easy fix or should I send it back? Thanks in advance.

1. Defective mags

2. This could also be a mag-related problem. I'm guessing that Norinco mags are not exactly high quality...try something else and see if the problem goes away.

3. There could be a variety of causes for this. When the gun doesn’t jam, how do the cartridges get extracted? Do they fly out vigorously or do they barely fall out/fly in your face?

They launch out. Usually bouncing off my hat or shirt and sometimes landing a few feet behind me.

Sorry to hear about your NP-29 troubles.... I'm willing to help you out & will take it off your hands for $250 [shipped].... :p

Seriously, change your mags to some decent quality after-markets ones. And allow some time to 'shoot your pistol in'... ;)

Plus brand new guns are a bit cranky, give it a good cleaning, that grease they use gums stuff up, fire 200 or so rounds out of it, and then see what's happening. I also touch up the paint on the sights a bit with some model paint and one strand of a paint brush.

At least you got yours.I am still waiting for mine to arrive.
The first thing I did is I bought some after market mags because I heard the factory mags suck:)

I agree, toss the 'Rinco mags, then oil and shoot the pistol. Mechanical devices have a relatively flat bell curve, thet require a break in, then they work about the same for a given period, then they fail.

Good mags and 300-500 rounds will make her shoot as good as she ever will.:)

From looking at the Marstar site, the NP-29 appears to have a lowered ejection port. It is definitely not normal for a 1911 with a lowered ejection port to send spent casings over your head – they should be flying either directly to the right or to the four o'clock position. Unfortunately, this is not something that is likely to be attributable to lack of lubrication or the "break-in period".

Verify that the ejector is not loose and has no visible signs of damage. Also, examine the edges of the ejection port to make sure there are no burs that could be interfering with ejection. If none of the above applies, your problem could be lack of extractor tension. This is a fairly common issue with 1911-type guns and can be fixed by "tuning" the extractor. While it is possible to do it yourself, unless you know exactly what to do, I would suggest sending the gun to Marstar for warranty repair or visiting your local gunsmith. Good luck.

Since it is new... could it be a Super Stiff recoil spring?

I know when I shoot Winchester Winclean in my new Steyr it wouldn't push the slide back far enough for the slide lock to engage.

My pistol when new was a pain to rack... very tight spring. It's good now (300 rnds later).

Anyway, clean the crap out of it (if you haven't already) and don't be afraid to dry fire it... I probably have dry fired mine at least 500 times :D break it in!

The mags? Look for wear marks on the mag bodies... see where the mag is rubbing then address it (high spot in metal? Obstruction perhaps?)

Good luck!

Funny I have never had an issue with the mags on my norinco's. At least you can get 10 rds into them when new and the way they pin them to 10 rds is ummmh, very "secure"

Magazines can be at the root of most semi auto problems. A bad magazine could even contribute to the failures to eject, if the mag is interfering with the slide. As folks have suggested, clean it thoroughly, look for marks resulting from interference, and try a different magazine. If you do decide to exchange it, please wait until after Marstar has processed my order.

okay I'll give it a good cleaning, dry fire it as much as I can and try to put 4 or 5 boxes through it in the next week. If I can, I'll try to find a couple more mags. If it's still not working right I guess I'll send it back.

My offer to purchase still stands... ;) :D

Hungry here: Since I am a proven Norinco NP29 lover, I'll offer you $ 260 and pay the shipping. Seriously, shoot it for a while and get some MecGar mags ! You'll love it....

aaaaaahhhhh I don't know what to do now.

ok so first off, I took off the slide and pulled out the barrel. I cleaned everything off and applied a light coat of gun oil. Then I spent the last couple days dry firing at the TV. Today I bought 150 rounds of Win 115 gr. and headed to the range and fired about 100 rounds. Here were the problems I found:

1. 1 mag still not droping free, obviously this is the magazine.

2. Slide locking on last shot 1 out of 10 times.

3. Ejected brass got caught in slide 3 times

4. This is a new problem and seems serious. I'm not sure if maybe I made some mistake cleaning it. At around 50 rounds or so, the trigger started to stick every once in a while. It was like I pulled the trigger and it didn't come back out or something. At first I could jiggle it a little and it would be fine, but eventually that wouldn't work. So a couple times I would have to rack the slide and eject the round. I noticed that it became harder and harder to rack the slide and eventually it was so hard it took me a couple minutes to get it to work. After this happened, I was looking at it and noticed that I couldn't put the saftey on. It was stuck with the slide back just enough that it wouldn't catch. Eventually whenever I tried to chamber a round, trigger wouldn't work and the slide would be stuck after the first shot (or even before the first shot) I really don't know what to do now, I really want this thing to work.

Rusty:

Another suggestion: How oiling the pistol like this....

* 2 drops of oil on each of the frame/slide rails on reassembly
* 1 drop of oil around the barrel and bushing interface
* 1 drop of oil on hammer pivot pin (really, it's the safety pivot pin)
* 2 drops of oil on the barrel lugs where the slide/barrel lockup

These are from the Cylinder & Slide lubing suggestions. Hang in there with the NP29. I love mine!!

I'm going to sound a bit common now.... but send it back and get it replaced.
I have to agre with eltorro.
If you are having these kinds of probs its best to send it back and let them know what exactly its doing.Maybe call them and see what they suggest.
