Hi everybody,

I’m new here and waiting for my PAL after finishing the CFSC. Looking for a recommendation for a first gun. I’ve had a few recommendations already but here’s what I think im looking for:

-Shotgun - 12 ga
-primarily for hunting small/big game for the freezer in Ontario but also to control coyotes
-ideally at or under $1K budget
-want something that will last in the sense that I won’t have a burning desire to upgrade a budget entry level shotgun in a couple years

What I’ve come up with so far

-Benelli SuperNova seems to fit the needs above from what I’ve read (open to suggestions)
-I’ve been recommended to get an SA as a first firearm as there’s less manual parts for a noobie, but I’d rather emphasize quality/longevity in a pump over paying more for an SA that might be lower quality if that makes sense.

I’m still looking around right now while I wait for my PAL not fixed on any particular firearm so thank you in advance for any suggestions.

Congrats on the licence.

I have a mossberg 500 pump combo with the 3 barrels. It’s a great reliable 12 gauge. I’ve had it for years with no issues.

For a plinker, Derya 22LR Is a sweet rifle, as well as the GSG16 is a fun and reliable.

Supernova is a great reliable shotgun as well, can’t go wrong with Benelli.

I bought a used SKS in an ATI stock that a gun shop I visited recommended and a cheap Churchill 12 gauge pump as my first guns.

An Sks was my first rifle too 16 years ago. I still have mine. Surplus ammo is also still relatively available and cheap.

Hello and welcome, I would agree with blackcats on starting small, take the time to learn how to operate safely and familiarize yourself with your firearm and safety features and handling as well as basic shooting skills before moving up. As far as shotguns go you don’t have to sacrifice quality for price. For example mossberg has under 1000$ models that stand the test of time. Do lots of research for what fits your needs and budget as it’s easy to just jump into things! I know I have hehe.
Just some friendly advice. Most of all have fun! Lots of rabbit holes to explore.

Very first ?

Ruger 10/22.

It will stay with you a lifetime.

Thereafter :

12 Ga : 870 or 500, with both long & short barrels

30 Cal Hunting Rifle : take your pick and join the endless argument over which particular 30 caliber cartridge and gun are the best (obviously it's a Marlin 30-30).

You mention the completion if the CFSC course and then say you want to "fill the freezer".

Have you also completed the Hunter Safety Course ?
You can't hunt with a PAL.
