Hello CGN!

Got a quick question:
What can be replaced on an antique percussion muzzleloader without changing its status (antique to non-restricted).

I am looking forward changing the barrel (integrity maybe compromised) and the stock (may be simply easier for me to build a new one to match the barrel).

Currently it is sold as a wallhanger for cheap and I have no use of a wallhanger in bad shape.

Thanks!

I believe it's generally the barrel that is considered the "official " bit of a muzzle loader for registration and other government purposes.

If it's a flint lock it's a moot point because even a modern made one is considered antique

The old rule for antiques was that if 2 of the 3 main components were original then it remained antique. Those being barrel, lock and stock. Some have claimed that the breech plug was what made it a firearm and therefore that could be reused in a newer barrel. Having said all that there are numbers of old original barrels around and one of those might suit your need. Place an ad in the parts section of the EE and you will be surprised what shows up. Cheers.

This is one of those "can of worms" problems.

The NFA comments on this are, in part,,,, "With muzzle-loading firearms, one of the severe problems is that there is no "frame or receiver" in many such firearms. The CFC issued a rather witless answer, which the NFA is exploiting, saying that the breech plug in such a firearm is the "frame or receiver" because the barrel screws onto it. Therefore, the breech plug IS the "firearm" -- and is the ONLY part of your muzzle-loader that requires registration. The RCMP replied to their copy of that letter by saying that the barrel is the "frame or receiver. Both replies are nonsense."

Complicating the issue more is also the fact that the page has not been up-dated since the cancelation of the registry.

With a new barrel and a new stock, I doubt the thing would have antique status. I certainly would not consider it to be antique.
