New pistol shooter. future IDPA. What pistol to get?

This action is done by IPSC and IDPA shooters every week safely and without incident by using the thumb roll method. The only incidents of an AD occurring when lowering the hammer happens when the shooter uses the pinch method. My good friend, Ron E. will tell you he had performed the action thousands of times during his competitive lifetime safely by using the thumb roll method. There is nothing unsafe about lowering the hammer on a CZ or Tanfoglio if the shooter uses the proper method. I have witnessed two AD's at IPSC matches when the pinch method was employed. Never with the thumb roll method.

All of this is true.

However; You can also just get a CZ with a decocker, and completely avoid all such drama.

Dextor I appreciate your love for the CZ, I have five of them, but they really are not the best design for IDPA frankly. I also know it is the archer not the arrow as well. But a new CZ with an 18# mainspring is not void on needs either. For the extra $200 for a CZ there just is not that much value in the gun to warrant the expenditure if he wants to play for fun in IDPA. If he gets really competitive he will be looking at a Glock 34 or an M&P Pro. Those are the guns that are in the hands of the winners at the Worlds and the US Nationals in IDPA. Different sport than IPSC/USPSA with different needs.

The OP will be well served with the Range Kit. He will have everything he needs to compete with anyone at his club. All he will need to buy is a yellow flowered Hawaiian shirt and he will be set. Ya just got to be cool....

ps To the OP dab a bit of green fluorescent hobby paint on the front sight and you will make the front sight faster to pick up. Poor mans fibre optic and I am not so sure it isn't just as good as a FO and more durable.

I really like my M&P... Do not like the CZ as you have to hold the Hammer, Pull the Trigger and let the Hammer down softly, and hope you don't mess up and end up with a AD ( accidental discharge - time to go home...) I have seen it happen.. Not good...

Hope you like the sport once you get going in it..

Having some apprehension about this is somewhat normal....but after just a little practice in the basement, this routine becomes second nature. It really is nothing to worry about.

Is the M&P a good choice to compete in IPDA and IPSC at a novice level?

Yes, and beyond. Vogel won the World shoot with a Glock 17.

Unless you are really determined, competitive and with talent the gun you choose is based upon personal choice, pocket book and advertising and dare I say ego. Find a gun you can afford, afford to shoot a lot and go play. If you choose the M&P go for it. Guys who own Glocks will choke, the CZ crowd will point out the pitfalls of your choice, The Tanfoglio fans will rave about their Stock 111's, and life will go on pretty much as normal. Just go play and enjoy the two sports. Spend your money on ammo and if you want to progress spend some on decent instruction.

The range kit really looks like the best deal out there and seems to make the most sense for a beginner. My eyeballs are spinning from all the reading.

Well said.

Can you convert a SP01 Shadow from a safety to a decocker? And would that be legal in IDPA and/or IPSC?

I don't know if they can be converted, but you can certainly buy them that way.

They call it an SPO1 Tactical, instead of SPO1 Shadow.
