new pistol

Ah, yes, the ever popular "which pistol" question.

The answer, of course, is the CZ Shadow. ;)

Glock /thread.

Just kidding. Hold/shoot as many as you can before buying. Best pistol is highly subjective. Only you can decide what is right for you.

(Has to be said: as always, a .22 is your best bet to learn good habits and practice without concern for expense. *I know* you asked for 9, but the 22 recommendation still stands. now on with the post...)

if it has to be a 9, check what feels good in your hand - there's a big difference in grip sizes and angles out there, and one of them will feel right for you. Some folks point naturally with one and not others, and IMO that should be the deciding factor. Realize that this is probably the first of many, so in all likelihood you'll own guns you love and those you don't.

The one that feels best in your hands giving you the best grouping.

A far less controversial question is what's the best food.

x2. Given that I love the Springfield XD and most folks tend to hate it, and I own a CZ SP-01 which most people love, personal preference is huge. Go buy 500 rounds of ammo, spend a few days at the range. Try a few range guns.

One thing that I've learned is that gun nutz are really friendly, especially when you come bearing your own ammo. If you see someone with a gun you haven't tried yet, tap them on the shoulder and ask questions. Ask if you can put 10-20 rounds through their gun. If they're real nice, they'll load the mags with their own stuff and tell you to not worry about it. If you were in the area, I'd happily let you try my CZ.

The same as what other people are saying, I'd say to try to get some hands on experience if you can. Eventually you'll find a gun that just fits you. The first time I held a Walther PPQ I knew it was the one. SIG P226 was the second one, I picked it up for the first time and said "Oh yes, this is it."

Thanks for the replies guys. Just starting to look. I have been shooting and hunting for years and just got hooked on pistols.
Thanks again guys. Is there any that I should stay away from because of certain problems that seem inheirant to a paticular model.
I should mention that the reason I am choosing 9mm is because the buddy that turned me on to pistols already has the reloading equipment.

Thanks again guys

plus one. These make the Sig feel like garbage. Go to a range near you and try as many as you can to find what YOU like best. The biggest mistake news make is being in a rush and buying the wrong thing. If you feel you MUST buy something get a .22 like a Kruger 22/45 or Browning Bookmark. .22s will make you shoot better and everyone should have one.
