New precision build, all parts FINALLY here!--Update with PICTURES.

Back up a second, you printed a 10 shot group at 1760 yards under 0.5MOA?! Nice shooting dude!

Ya, I was pretty pumped. We couldn't even see it. We just kept hearing the ring then Took the quad down and I nearly peed my pants. At a mile, a standard torso target looks pretty small!! It out shot my first 338AI. Now I have a full custom 338AI being built. Can't have a 284 out shoot a boomer at a mile.

I was a a 1200 yard shoot and managed to snag a nice 3 round group at 1200 yards that was a hair under 6". It was crushing the .308s in the wind.

My smiths 7wsm was about 7moa less to 1200 though.

Quick update, I am now up to 2970 fps average over ten shots with a stiff load of H4831SC and a 180 Lapua Scenar L bullet. Accuracy is holding nicely at 0.5 MOA or maybe a little less out to 400 meters, will test further very soon. I am starting to see the "donut" on the inside of the case neck you spoke of, how do you deal with this? I can certainly turn the outside of the case necks no trouble, but what kind of kit do I need to turn the inside?

Thanks.

Yeah, I was there. It was some great shooting!

You need a reamer to get rid of the donuts, I had this same issue with a 260AI. Its easy to do however I didn't notice any change in accuracy, velocity or bullet drop over long range.

Thanks of the heads up, I have emailed K&M and will see what they come up with.

IVO, are you saying you removed the donut, but did not notice any difference after doing so? If that is the case, why spend the time and money to do it?

Have the K&M donut mandrel. Regular reamers work better IMO. I find removing them works better on unsized cases. You can get reamers in 0.0005" increments from KBC Tools.

I used the K&M neck trimmer with inside trimming mandrel. I did it after the 3 firing and the donut appeared. I wish I would have done it right after necking up. Would have saved me some headaches and wondering. Really tightened up my groups. I ended up having to get a slightly smaller bushing after the trimming though.

It is a one time operation. Clean up the necks once and life is good. Im about to order the stuff for my .338 Improved and get those necks cleaned up to see how much it tightens up at a mile and further. Was getting some unexplained flyiers on the weekend.

Oh and I did sell the .284 Going for the 7LRM.

Got the Bob Jury barrel and a GRS stock for the 7LRM build. Reamer should be here next week and brass ships in 2 weeks from Gunwerks to Grouse River, Whidden dies ship next week. Action is coming out of Spartan Precision right after the Poker Rally. Should have the build put together by August. 180s at 3100-3200!! Laser guided 180s!!

That's exactly what I am saying. I did a whole bunch of reading on the Hide and 6mmbr and figured if you have donuts that they should be removed. As it turns out it had no measurable effect in my case. I have no idea if there was any difference in chamber pressure but everything that I could think of testing concluded that there was no difference(other that a bit of money and a lot of time wasted but I'll chalk it up to a learning experience).

In hindsight, the rifle was laser accurate before so I don't know what I was expecting. Lol.

Having said all of this, if the rifle was throwing out flyers or shooting inconsistently, this may be something to check.

Is there a chance your bullet was seated above the donut? If you are seated really long the base of the bullet may not have engage the donut and wouldnt have made a difference. I was seeing weird flyers and could only contribute it to neck tension. Once I cleaned that up my groups improved substantially. Hopefully I see it in my other cases as well.

There are lots of times I feel that reloading is all lessons learned and wasted time!

So an update is in order. A few days ago I reported a velocity of 2970fps, this is complete bull$h1t. On the day I recorded those velocities, I was getting HUGE extreme spreads in my velocity numbers, like a whopping 390fps! The only thing I can attribute this to is I was using one of those fancy dancy electronic powder dispensers and not verifying on a good balance beam scale. This is something I KNOW you should do, but I was in a hurry and the electronic dispenser had proved itself to me in the past so I trusted it. WRONG MOVE DUMB DUMB! I went back today and had GOOD reloads, dispense with the electronic unit to just below target weight, then switch to a balance beam and hand trickle up to my intended weight. I also ran another test while I was at it, I loaded 20 rounds and crimped 10 and left the other 10 uncrimped. This was an eye opener! The crimped loads had an extreme spread of 6fps while the uncrimped loads had a spread of 74fps! Accuracy was better with the crimped loads as well. A good friend of mine always preaches to me to crimp my loads, and I do it for hunting rounds, but generally don't for target loads, well, I have changed my mind to say the least.

Have a look at the photos and see for yourself...

Wow, thats really interesting. Never thought about crimping a target load before. Very interesting results. What barrel length are you running with those velocities? What powder and what charge?
