I don't mean to start the 9 milionth bear defense thread, but has anyone ever tried this on an actual bear? I mean, is it scientifically proven to stop an angry or hungry bear? We know for a fact that spreading capsaicin on something attracts bear. We also know for a fact these things will incapacitate humans (every G20 meetings we see cops use it like it's salad dressing), but on bears? They don't work very well on dogs (at least not on an angry attacking pitbull, rottweiler or doberman), that has been tested many times too.

I know some people carry these when they go into bear territories, but I don't think someone who ends up face to face with mama bear and her cubs will live to tell the tale. I would think the most effective way of using this is on whoever is with you. Then you don't need to outrun the bear, just need to outrun that guy.

If you get them in the eyes I can see it being pretty effective.

Bear spray makes robber run home to mommy.

Here's a bear one, not many great videos of the spray being used on large or aggressive bears.

Here's a good account of an aggressive sow turned away by bear spray.

I could be mistaken but I believe Ardent has a thread here someplace where he shared some first hand experience with a result that wasn't exactly a glowing endorsement .... Or all that reassuring as I recall.
