Been browsing SFRC for the past couple days, trying to find an interesting, economical semi for hunting, and I came across the Auto Ordnance New Production M1.

How are these holding up? My main intent is hunting, so it'd have to be reliable & hold up to hunting abuse.
I'll be hunting does and 'yotes from 75 yards or less, so the 30 Carbine round should suffice.

Disucssing the round: I assume the 30 Carbine round isn't very common? If memory serves correct, I don't remember seeing at my local sporting goods store.

M-1 Carbines have 18-inch barrels, making them Restricteds in Canada automtically. Canadian limit is 18.5 inches.

The law was written specifically to ban the M-1 Carbine.

After all, 1 was used in a crime in Montreal, the other in 2 hold-ups in TRONNA...... so the whole country had to pay for it.

Justice, I am told.

There were an estimated 100,000 M-1 Carbines in Canada at that time; in a year, they registered 2,000.

That's one that they don't talk about. Someone should ask Wendy about it.

The cartridge is not common because the rifles are Restricted, but it is available, made by all 3 major North American makers. Original MV was 1990 ft/sec with a 110-grain slug.

NOT hard to handload but a definite nuisance as to Port Pressure. Stick with faster pistol-type powders. Winchester 231 works well.

Hope this helps.

LOL - true story that I've met more than one person with a real M2, naughty bits and all, totally unregistered and used as farm guns. I've also seen more than one "verified" as an 18.5" non-restricted model, but with USGI barrel markings. Go figure.

The Auto Ord ones have mixed reviews, though most of the internet lore is that the ones with problems were the early production US models. Supposedly they are a bit more finicky about mags than the GI guns. That being said, some guys have swapped in GI parts and noted improvements, while other people on here seem to love them right out of the box.

For about the same money, you can sometimes get a converted GI gun with a new barrel, either a GI sleeved to longer length or a new Criterion. That's what I'd carry about in the woods and it would work with GI predictability.

Ran into one at a gun show several years go. Guy assured me that it was perfectly okay, just show him my FAC and take it home.

Looked down inside and Trip Lever was there, full M-2 trigger group, M-2 Bolt, Receiver, you name it.

It was a full machine-gun, likely one of the ones that came in in truckloads from Indonesia in the 1960s, missing only the $3 Change Lever and $1 Screw. They sold here for $69.95 but they were short, handy and light. Lot went for boat guns out in BC.

Somebody (not me) took it home for $225.

If I saw something like that today, I would run like blazes: cops trolling our gun shows, looking for sick birds and trying to get people to do something illegal so they can bust them.

LOVELY country we live in today. Our grandparents would not even recognise it. It has become everything they fought against.

What happened?

At the end of the day, if I found an M2 at a gunshow, I would ask to buy everything but the barelled receiver and disconnector lever. The rest of the bits are still legal and useful :)

I've yet to see any substantiation of that rumour, though if true, it would be nice.

If anyone wants to sell me a GI M1 carbine receiver (with or without barrel - no matter) before the prices fall through the floor though, PM me. I need one to finish a project ;)

well we are about to see a bunch more war stock m1 carbines soon, so collectors should be happy

Unfortunately , they'll be restricted. Piss off how politicians can arbitrarily write a law to exclude certain specific firearms. Does a quarter inch make a difference in the Real world.

Note: Not all M1 Carbines are restricted. I found a Universal M1 Carbine at
one of our local Gun swaps and it's a 19 inch model. I took this to the range after
I bought it and it was double feeding and would not reset the hammer after the second
shot or it would fire two in a row and not reset the hammer. I then replaced the hammer and
the sear and took the Carbine to the range and it had functioned as it should.

It looks like the person I got it from took this on trade for another gun he had
on the table and was selling this gun on his table without first hand knowing if
it it was working as it should. Anyways I bought this gun from him knowing 1
that this was a rare gun indeed because I had been looking for one like this for about
20 years and everything that was out there was 18" and under and restricted, but not
this one since it was 19" and Non Restricted so I snapped it up quickly.

As I said before I took this gun to the range and it failed many times and when I found out
that it did not work I took some time and researched it on the Internet to find a fix to the
problem and now it works as it should.

It looks like the previous owner was trying to do some modifications to the hammer to get
it to go full auto, but had botched it up, causing it to have errors in firing and got rid of
it because he could not figure out how to fix it or could not find the parts.

Smellie - I ran into a rack of those in the SIR store in Polo Park back in the'60s. Pulled back the slide to check the chamber, saw the M-2 mark, slot for the selector, looked in through the magazine well, there was the teeter totter. Decided I just didn't need the trouble, put it back on the rack. At the time, one could have installed the parts and registered it.

The new Auto-Ordnance gun has a barrel which is 18.5 inches long, making it non-restricted. Mine works fine, looks great and is fun to shoot. Sail in Ottawa always seems to have amo for it when I need it, both FMJ and lead tiped.

My universal had very loose mag tolerances. Lots of double feeds,no feeds, etc. Spent some time swaping trigger housings from my rock-ola and plainfield and found that by using a usgi housing my troubles went away. Called Milarms and also ordered extra trigger parts to go with the housings (always by two cause you never now when your gonna need it). Was hoping for cast but got two funky looking laminated housing they worked just as well.

Now just have to figure out how to deregister my plainfield after adding a 19 inch barrel to it. Called once said they'd get back but nothing transpired. How does one find a verifier in a community when the goverment doesn't even know

I noted that one of the new sponsors - Tulammocanada, sells it. 35 cents a pop.
