I have no connection to this outside of someone who will place an order if this goes off but a gentleman on a Facebook group (The 54r Group) is trying to put together a group of SVT-40 owners willing to place an order for new production magazines. You can find the thread at:

No cost yet -- it is dependent on how many magazines are ordered. Figured someone might be interested given how hard spares are to find.

I bought 2 new production SVT magazines a while back.

It took some dremel work (slow and patient) on the mag catch lug to get them to seat properly and lock in place well.

Then took them to the range and...

They just wouldn't feed. The bolt would go home without stripping a round off the top.

Back to the shop, and I looked more closely at the mags and the way it was seated in, and compare it against my 100% reliable mag that came with the rifle... The retaining lips on the top of the mag were bent too far over, which was keeping the rounds from coming up high enough for the bolt to catch and strip them from the mag.

Getting them bent into the right angle so that:

a) The top round came up high enough to get stripped and driven into place by the bolt
b) Not so loose that the magazine was self emptying

Was... A serious pain in the @ss.

Eventually, I got it to work. And my aftermarket mags now work as reliably as the original.

If you search around, you'll find that most people have similar experiences with them. The people who put the tinker time in to get them to work reliably are probably in the minority.

If these are coming from one of the existing production outfits that puts them out once in a while, expect a similar experience, and you'll pay roughly $80/mag to have that kind of fun.

If you have the time and patience to tinker with new production mags, go for it. Just don't get your hopes up for something that works "right out of the box" - because they seldom do.

To make a long story short, all reproduction svt 40 mags come from the same place. They were made for a german importer who send East German parade magazine for a sample. This mag was meant to lock in but was mis angled on purpose and would not feed. This was done to prevent soldier from using his rifle on parade if by any chance he would obtain life ammo.
All along there was and is only one type of aftermarket svt 40 mag that was ever made. It will not work without serious modification

Thx for the info. The guy is looking to get 20 round mags produced.

The FB group is closed but I got added quickly.

Got my name on the list, provided they can pin these suckers to 5 rounds.

I would be nice to see _proper_ reproduction of either experimental or field-made hi-cap mags for SVTs. I wonder if anyone in this group have the pictures of them....

Numrich offers repro magazines for $45...but they won't modify it to 5 rounds, so I didn't order any.

Sounds like these are going to be brand new designed repros. The vendor is asking for sample guns to ensure that they can fit the average SVT-40.
Hopefully, they come back stating that they are willing to pin or limit the follower to 5 rounds.......

Yeah, they told - new design and look like enlarged regular mag. I don't see any point in it unless our laws change. Having original 10 rounder pinned to 5 or some fantasy aftermarket pinned to 5? Hmmm. I think I still stick to originals.

The company that could be fabricating these new repro mags is willing to pin to 5 !!!

The guy doing the survey says he speaks with the company every second day or so and they are definitely interested... provided there is enough demand.

I have made him aware there are a ton more SVT-40s in Canada then in the US so it would be in the company's interest to cater to us Canucks. :)

Everyone on CGN who owns an SVT (and is frustrated by the utter lack of a good repro SVT-40 mag) should join this FB page and express their interest.

Cheers !!

I wouldn't mind original, but they are so pricey and hard to find.
If we can get some reliable repros, then I don't mind that much......

We definitely need to get everyone on here that would like some extra mags to jump onto that thread. They are now specifically looking at how many Canadians want them to determine if they want to pin or not.....

Ok, explain it to me. Apart of the SHTF scenario where I assume SVT will not be your weapon of choice, why would you need more than one mag for single rifle? I have a lot of mags, but in the extreme case when I brought 3 svts to the range I brought along only 2 mags, one to shoot and one just in case of the issues with first one. So why? And even IF you think you really need just one more - they stay on EE for several days before someone buys them. So even if I needed just one extra mag I would not hesitated to pay 100-120 for original one rather then 40-80 for aftermarket.

After seeing so many shenanigans on Facebook gun related pages - trading deals gone sour, "retailers" who's only online presence was FB, new manufacturers who's primary press release system/customer service was through FB...

I'll watch the thread here with interest, and if it all works out, great, I might get a couple extra. But I'm not going to hold my breath, or join an FB group just to track it.
