Anyone ever thought of re boring a savage model 99 to 338 federal or 358 winchester?? Was looking for a quick little carbine lever action. Was just wondering if this is feasible with a 308 barrel. I know RKS does rebores hmmmm

I think it would work pretty well, provided there's enough 'meat' in the barrel to increase the bore size. Usually with Savage 99s in .308, they have a decent sized barrel, so you should be able to go up to at least a .338 Federal without too much trouble. The nicest part about reboring rather than rebarrelling is that there's no other finishing work to be done; the barrel is already blued and the stock doesn't have to be altered. I've been looking at reboring an old .250 savage barrel for a 99 that's been shot completely out (no rifling left at ALL). I'm thinking a 6.5mm x 250 or a .270 x 250, depending on how much they have to work with. Get the old girl running again.

Ron Smith In Alberta, he does quality work and from people I have talked to his rebores are very nice. The comment about no re-finishing is on my mind as well, even if I use a 308 barrel and if it had to be shortened one inch, so what? Its not going to be intended as a long range open country rifle more for fast woods with some elk hitting power! Even a 358 Winchester might be better

What about a 260 Remington??? Would the case work?

Can't the 6.5 Creedmore be formed from the 22-250 case ? Magazine should handle that on depending on OAL loaded.......Harold

Unless it's a mag fed 99 the 358 Win will be a bigger problem than the 338. You would have to find a 358 rotor or open the one up that's factory. Yes I know the 308 is the same casing but for some reason it won't work with a 99 rebored to 358 Win. The 338 Fed has been done a lot of times now without problems.
