Well finished my 30-06 project. Had an old Remington 700 with a rusted out barrel so I decided to have some fun. After removing the barrel is sent to action to get refinished at Black Box Custom. They did an amazing job and first class customer service. Then i ordered a 26" MTU profile barrel in 1:9 twist and match chamber from JC Custom, again first class service. Added a trigger tech diamond trigger and dropped everything in an MDT Field chassis. Just missing a muzzle break and a good glass and ring. Currently just dropped my Discovery ED glass on it right now. the rings shown have been replaced for low ones. Now to go to the range and test that beast out. plan is to work up a load with 178gr ELD or heavier.

So short update, took the rifle out to the range and lapped the barrel. talk about tedious works. LOL I also had a box of Hornady Superformance 180gr SST on hand. I usually get 2 or 3 box of factory to get a baseline for my new rifles to get a baseline. So after doing 4 groups of 5 rounds each, the average group size was 1.3" so this rig is definitely a on the right track. Very confident that i can get it under 1" without to much problems with reload.
 
I would expect groups in the .300's. Over an inch is actually pretty bad. Factory 700's with factory ammo usually shoot under an inch. Get out there and get it tuned in...
 
gaudzy, why did you lap the barrel as they come lapped and we know that Bartlein and Krieger say do not do it. Has JC advised that you should do it? Have you asked him about it?

he recommends a break in for is barrel. nothing fancy, just cleaning the bore after every shot for the first 5 to 10 rounds. not much but still a bit of a payne to do at the range. LOL

A barrel from JC will do WAAAAY better then 1"

I'd keep tinkering until you get groups in the .3's

So you are referring to a one-shot-and-clean type of break-in?
Not a bad idea, but it certainly isn't lapping. Which is a good thing, cause lapping a barrel isn't something to do on a whim.
 
As Jonnyofalltrades mentioned, breaking-in and lapping are separate procedures and we are glad that you do not "lap". JC makes great barrels and we highly recommend them.

You had the boys scared for a minute. Visions of a tight patch with JB paste or worse run in and out of your new barrel got everyone's attention!

You get that 06 shooting GOOD ? With Handloads Yet ? 🤷🏼‍♂️RJ
 
yeah, turns out 50gr of IMR 4064 behind Hornady 178gr BTHP Match projectile is the winner. After shooting 150 rounds of that load i have an average speed of 2785 fps, ES 6 fps, SD 2.5 fps and average 5 rounds group is 0.635 MOA at 100m.

There you go that's more like it, very near the magical 1/2"
