Ok...I have a new stainless King tube here in .284 bore 10 twist, Sendero contour.....and one each of the HS factory Sendero/VS stocks(ie: one LA,one SA:) )......no action yet...I have reamers and dies for 284 Win,280AI and 7mm Rem Mag......which would you build?..and why?...in keeping with the reamers and dies on hand..

Go 284 win BUT Deepen chamber to take a OAL of 3.1" You can seat bullet out further(Than in a 88 or 100 win). I did that for my 1909 custom/with Douglas BBL. I get 7mm mag factory ballistics from a std action! 3 moose so far also deer and a groundhog @350 yds!!! Regards JITC

If you are using a Sendero, you are going for longer ranges, right?

Use the one that gives you the most horsepower, the one wiht the most case case capacity.

7RM, easy. The others may be more "cool" but the 7RM will give yo umore velocity.:)

Why hobble yourself with the lower powder capacity? I'd go with the 7mm RM; there is no .284 Win or .280AI that can hold a candle to a properly loaded 7mm RM.

I agree with the reasoning above.

What are you planning on using the rifle for?
I am not a fan of belted magnums for a few reasons that cna be debated till the horse is in the ground and still getting beaten!

However, a freing just had Rangesports Unlimited do up a 180 AI bareel from a rifle that was originally a 7mag, then went to a 7STW, and finally a smith barreld
280.
This rifle is a very accurate , long range deer rifle that will drop anything out to 500 with no problem.

Brass life is excellent, pressures are fine, he is a happy camper!

I've alway liked the 280AI and you have a reamer, so that is wht I would choose!

The 280Ackley is in the front of the pack......the 7mm Rem Mag is a very good and under-rated cartridge...but a 280AI wins the "cool" race every time...:)..the 284, while a neat cartridge would have to be single loaded to get near the lands in a short 700...
I'm not after a 1000 yard rifle anyway...although I know the 280AI will do it...if a 168gr .308" bullet at 2700 will do 1000 yards, a 162 AMax at 2900-3000 will do it better:D
The choice may come down to whatever old 700 I come across first for a donor action.....

What to build????

Hi Rembo, this is an easy one, I would go with the 284. Why, well for a hunting rifle it will do anything the other two will do, its a better shaped brass and if you view 6br.com they are always in agreement with this case regardless of caliber.

How about a 7mm RUM? If your going for max powder capacity and volocity. Some benefits / considerations would be a rebated rim vs the belt of a 7mm Rem Mag, headspacing of the shoulder vs the belt, a hell of a lot more case capacity / more recoil.

Wait a second here.
A RUM adds up to a magnum length action......either a P14 or a more modern action which is going to be pretty pricey.
The 280AI is good on a number of points.
He has the reamer.
The difference between it and a 7mm Rem Mag is minimal....the game certainly can't tell.
You avoid the whole "larger bolt face, belted case problem" and it uses powder very efficiently.
P.O.Ackley was a well thought out individual.
And who says it won't end up a perfectly good sheep rifle, BigUglyMan.
Maybe the slightly lower recoil will allow a lighter stock?
If you must chamber to 7mm Rem Mag then go ahead, but Chilly Willy, I think the RUM is a little silly. ;)
