Well, here she is. The newest purchase.

Magnum Research Baby Eagle in 9mm.

I haven't shot her yet, but I will say this based on field stripping it. This has to be the most well made gun I own, or have ever felt. It weighs a ton, literally, 2.2 pounds without a loaded mag, but man alive it feels solid.

2 things I noticed when handling it in the store.

#1. The finish sucks. It almost feels like suede and the counter gun had only been handled, not shot and it was already scratched to $%^.

#2. I can't reach the slide LOCK, which doesn't matter because evidently the slide LOCK isn't meant to release the slide ;). Either my hands are too small or it's to far back. It's about equal to being like the large frame Glocks.

i agree the finish is pretty ####ty but you can touch it up with a bluing pen if it bothers you. I love my eagle, I wish I we could get the .45 version though. Its a little more compact and its weight to caliber ration makes more sense hehe..oh wellz
 
I will introduce you to currently in-fashion term: It is a slide LOCK, not a slide release. The ONLY purpose for the little lever is to lock the slide open when there is no empty magazine in the pistol - as such, you should be able to safely rotate your right hand far enough around the grip while maintaining muzzle control, and retracting the slide to the rear with an over-hand grip with your left hand.

The overhand, or "clam shell" grip is taught to release the slide on a loaded magazine, as part of the "tap-rack" first stage stoppage drill, and to lock open the slide on an empty magazine... Build reflex arc in your nervous system by doing it the same way, time after time after time.

Just a thought...

The CZ 75 based pistols are harder to use the clam shell grip on due to the low profile.

$750 at Wild West Shooting in the West Edmonton Mall.

Yes, I bought a gun at a mall. :dancingbanana: I think it's pretty funny.

The chrome one's are $900 and very nice. I couldn't justify the extra $150 so I got the blued one instead. Besides, it's my favorite colour.
 
terrific pistol! ive owned two of the .40 s&w's, both were great shooters, and felt great. as mentioned finish is poor. would be sweet to have one reblued by a gunsmith. also i feel overpriced also, i would buy another if they competed with glock, and were 650 new.
 
Managed to pick my 9mm up lightly used for $650 with a few extra mags - nice trigger, reasonably accurate - I'm pretty happy with it *except* for the finish...

I've got the hogue grips on mine - they're a nice upgrade if you have a bigger hand.

Its a great gun for sure. I bought mine (chrome) a couple of months ago from Frontier. I completley agree with your comment on the slide lock as I to find it very hard to use. It is just not in a comfortable position to operate with ease. The breakdown is very easy which a novice like me really appreciates as well. With all this being said mine just broke after approx 600 rounds so how they will treat me in the warranty phase has yet to be seen. Marlin at Frontier has been great and is currently looking into what they are going to do for me.
 
IMHO, the BE I owned had one of the best out of box triggers out there and was extremely accurate. Enjoy!! You got yourself a nice gun...:)
 
Baby Eagles are very cool. A solid piece of steel. It's got some heft to it and once you work the action in, it should cycle smooth as silk. I've always found them to shoot high so I modified my front sight to correct that. I've had a couple of mags explode from dropping on the hard ground but I managed to get them back together. Loading the mags can be a pain in the thumb as the springs I find are tight. Easy to clean and a hell of a good time shooting them. May I also suggest it's daddy the Desert Eagle as a nice addition to the family....enjoy it!

I did and I nologer get soar thumbs from my baby but the desert on the other hand always make my wallet soar! LoL!

Oh, TOTALLY! That was one of the reasons I got rid of mine - It was an excellent shooter, but I wasn't driving it "right", and then Kim Campbell brought in those silly mag limits...

The correct term is slide stop/release. If it was just a slide stop they wouldn't put a lever on the frame ;) they'd make it internal; the lever is there so you can reach it with your thumb....

This is one of the reasons why I'm a not a fan of CZ design; the lever is WAY too high and far out (due to low slide profile).

But the baby eagle is probably the best looking of all the variants.

Good purchase i picked one up about a month ago and i love it, my finish is still pretty good and im not really finacky about it, it is there to be used. anyways i'm not to sure how big your hands are but i really like the positioning of the slide lock/release i normaly hit it with my thumb. anyways good purchase they are great guns.
