New regulation regarding feral pigs in Ontario

Wild pigs are an invasive species. Judging by what's happening down in US, they cause tremendous damage to environment, ecosystem and native wildlife. I've heard about wild pig sighting in the area north of Pickering. They reproduce almost as quickly as rats which means today's problem could be a disaster tomorrow. As per new regulation, it is prohibited to hunt for or trap wild pigs in Ontario??!! The main argument behind this decision is that hunting could make situation even worse. "Removing individual pigs has minimal effect on the population. It can lead to breaks up groups of pigs being scatted across the landscape and also teaches pigs to avoid hunters". If population grow, pigs will be seeking new breeding grounds and larger habitat anyway. Most of the invasive species in Ontario, including fish (asian carp) are not protected and can be hunted with no limits...why should feral pigs "enjoy" a special treatment?

I think this is more a lieberal protection racket as it appears that Onterrible is chalk full of feral pigs particularly in Ottawa.
Agreed however that pigs do have extremely strong self preservation skills, just like politicians, and taking 1 or 2 out of a group just educates the rest better. much like coyotes out here.

There is a bounty on them in Alberta. We can hunt them in BC but they would prefer they get reported. They have been reported just north of me but I have not seen any so far.

According to some scientists if you kill one in the group (and not all), the rest of the group tends to scatter and form separate groups, expanding their range as they go.

Other experts will tell you if you don't do anything about it they'll scatter, form separate groups, expand their territory and numbers...

Probably because someone thinks they can make money.. look closer and there's likely lobbying and dinners over this " situation".
Like how they eliminated resident guide licenses for bear...

Your posts often give me a good laugh. Problem is I usually find myself having to stop because I know what you are saying is true....

They are going to spread regardless of which approach you take. I think the regulations will change once they realize that they have not controlled them.

It all depends for how long they will defend their position, bureaucrats are known to be thick-skinned and extremely stubborn. My concern is how much damage pigs will cause to ecosystem and wildlife before someone wake the f*** up.

Yes, THOSE pigs aka senators sure a special group who only look after themselves...
I am curious what the biologist in Ontario has in plan for this beast of invasive species?

Rob

I don't believe the MNR is going to be able to control the wild pig population by trying to capture the entire sounder at the same time.

You can see lots of these trap videos from the USA on Utube & yet wild pigs are a problem...

MNR simply doesn't have the resources & I think it's a mistake not to let folks shoot them on sight.

Cheers
Jay
