New Remington 597, So far Not Impressed....

I picked up a new Remington 597 that came with a Tasco 3-9x32 scope. I brought it home and gave it a cleaning, mounted the scope and off to the range I went.

To make a long story short, I wasnt having much luck with groupings or consistency and finding out later that the scope was mounted crooked. I got the scope mount issue sorted out and went back out today to try again. Using the 50 yard bench, I started trying to zero the scope. I was using Winchester Dynapoint GT 40gr bulk ammo. My shots were still all over the map with zero consistency even though I was using a solid bench rest and little to no wind.

I know the problem is not me. Can the issue be the ammo or is this another case of a bad Remington product?

Sounds like a dud, these things happen. I have one and its a beauty, shoots great, hope you can take it back for a new one or refund.

I think Ruger sneaks into the Remington factories and sabotages some of the 597s, to instill fear in the hearts of those who don't buy the 10/22.
Honestly though since I've never had a problem with Winchester bulk, you might have your gunsmith take a look.

I'd be taking a serious look at the scope and mounts as don't believe the fault is with the gun. Had there been a fail to feed / eject issue then we could work on that.

I owned a 597 in the past. Although is was very very finicky with ammo it was extremely accurate. Make sure your scope is on right and if that isn't the problem bring it back.

Those bulk Federal 525 cartridges work good in mine, and Remington Game ?? something or other are the most accurate.

When I clean it later, I'll take a close look down the barrel and next time I have it at the range I'll try a different ammo with and without the scope and see if there's a difference.

Come to think of it, I only use the Remington psp because anything else I fed it wouldn't feed well. And if I recall there were issues with the early magazines that were replaced with a second generation. Accuracy though, is not an issue with mine and I have put thousands of rounds through it.

Yeah it's a pretty sad day when a bloody Remington is better than a Ruger.

What could possibly be wrong with a $37.00 WalMart scope. It's clearly the guns fault.

anybody remember targettarget? he had a 597 and it would up going back to remington because it wouldn't shoot worth a damn.

It could be anything but sounds more like scope. Especially low-end ones. Also, check barrel-receiver joint, if everything is tight anf wether stock is attached solidly. You mentioned takingit apart and it happened to me and many of my friends that rifle wouldn't shoot worth sheat after major clean up. Reassemble and wipe contact surfaces dry before putting it togethr. Ever heard of bedding problem - that could be it. Also check crown, switch ammo, foul the barrel before shooting for groups. Don't be surprised if aftel all said and done it will turn out to be the scope. Apart from 10/22 everything else suppose to group 2" at 50 yards, including 597. Mine is good honest 2 MOA rifle with hunting ammo and thin barrel.
