New Remington 597, So far Not Impressed....

I will try with less lube, and run it really dry to see what happens. My vtr runs flawless on the right ammo, its the older one that has at least 10 000 rnds through her that has minor problems to feed and extract. All in all for the use and abuse I put on it and for the money I paid (like under$200) I guess I cant complain. you get what you pay for.

Mine feeds anything but I get the best groups with cci stingers but I’m cheep so I usually shoot the bulk packs
Try clip for lube it's all I use

Finally I loaded 3 Remingtons and got an even tighter group. I repeated the process and the results were similar with the Remington ammo seeming to perform the best.

The thunderbolts got the best group???
I've found them to be dirty, inaccurate, and inconsistent. Guess the particular rifle I was using didn't like them. Good to know they worked for you

So far of the three types of ammo I've tried they have been thee most consistent and tightest. But they are also the only ones that I had fail to feed and fail to fire, about 5 of each. I also noticed that they were quite dirty, even the empty casings were over half blackened.

I just use the cheap Bulk federal rounds. I got her tuned in amazing! only sighted it in at 50 yards and they where all within a a loonie. I was shooting off of sticks. Put a pop can out at 100 yards. aimed 2" high and went 9 of 10 on it. I was more then impressed. I have gone threw 5 boxes and have only had 2 jams. Cant complain about that one bit!

chev.

Ahh alright. Good on you for getting consistent accuracy out of them.

I have had success with Federal 510 ammo in most of my .22s and find it far more consistent than Remington or Winchester. I have to admit that I did own two 597s, the base model and a heavy barrel target job . The base model shot as well as you would expect a cheap rifle to shoot but the target model performed like a full choked shotgun. I tried all the usual tricks to get it to shoot but it was no good. Both 597s were traded.!! If you go on the RFC website, and scroll down to the Remington section, you will see that it is considered normal practice to have to carry out certain modifications to ensure you have a reliable, reasonably accurate rifle. I am of the old school where I think the manufacturer should iron the snags out of a new product BEFORE launching it on the market. JMO

Mine hates truncated anything. It will jab half of them and toss the other half in the general direction of the target but....
What happens is that the square edge of the truncated bullets catches the edge of the chamber and either jambs or peels a little strip of lead off the side before chambering.

CCI stingers are fun once and awhile but the standard diet is winchester super X HP or RN. Clean the mag and action at the end of the day and she will digest 100 of them easily trouble free.

Never likedd the wiggly remington ammo. The bullets were poorly crimped and the cases came out black...if they fired.

Found that the high velocity rounds aren't much good at long distances. Seems that when the bullets slow back down past the speed of sound the shockwave shakes them around a bit and accuracy suffers.

Tried 2 different types of ammo today. Blazer 40 grain lead round nose and CCI Stinger Hypervelocity 32 grain.

I set up at the 50yd mark again and the barrel was still dirty from my last visit. I loaded 3 rounds of the CCI first and my results were all over the target again, 6-8 inch spread. I loaded another 3 and got similar results. Next up was three of the Blazers. The pattern tightened up significantly but was still all over. I loaded another 3 and tried again. Tighter yet with about 2 inch groups.

Switching back to the CCI for another 6 I was still getting a wide spread with a couple not even hitting paper. Another 6 with the Blazer and 2-4 inch spread.

With now approximately 130-140 rounds down the pipe since the last cleaning I packed a piece of cloth into the breach, closed the bolt and squirted about 3 1/2ml of No 9 down the barrel until the cloth was visibly wet, another shot of No. 9 and tilted the barrel down til it dripped out and then laid the gun on its side and let it soak about 5 minutes . Bore brush x 10 passes then patches. Repeated the same process again.

With a now clean barrel and a fresh target, the results of the following shots are shown on the target below. I started with the CCI on the top left portion of the target with three shots. The first shot did not appear on appear so I loaded a fourth. I found that the first one just caught the target edge. I then loaded 3 Blazers and used the top right.

As I seemed to have been getting more consistency with the Blazer, I decided to adjust my scope according to those groupings. Using the target center I loaded 5 Blazers and adjusted left. 3 shots and adjusted left again, then 2 more shots. The last 2 being less then an inch and near center. I loaded another 3 for the top right again and had a 3 shot group inside 1 inch.

Switching back to the CCI again, I loaded 5 for the target center. The first 3 formed a 3 inch triangle to the left of the center. No scope adjustments were made and the next 2 were 1 1/2. Another 5 in for the bottom left, first 3 left a 2 inch spread and the last 2 inside 1 inch.

The final 3 for the Blazer on the bottom right put the first 2 inside an inch and 1 1/2 below center and the last one center.

With the CCI and Blazer ammo, I had zero fail-to-fires or misfeeds. Of all the ammo I have tried with this gun so far, it seems to like Lead Round Nose the best (Blazer and Remington Thunderbolt).

Note: just noticed when reading the boxes, both CCI and Blazer are made by the same company....

I think I may have FINALLY found ammo that this gun will shoot. American Eagle copper plated 38gr. I picked up 6 different types of ammo today to try:

Winchester SuperX Target lead round nose 40gr
Winchester Wildcat lead round nose 40gr
Winchester SuperX high velocity lubaloy coated 37gr
Remington Yellow Jacket truncated cone hollow point 33gr
Federal Champion lead round nose 40gr
American Eagle copper plated hollow point 38gr

The A.E. ammo is the only one that actually grouped together. I shot the entire box and it grouped up into about a 3 inch circle at 50 yards. All the other stuff was all over the board. Next time out I am going to get a couple more boxes of A.E. and see if it continues to shoot the same way on a clean barrel.

Joe549 a couple of quick questions I got?
  1. Is the barrel retainer still tight in the upper reciever?
  2. How loose or tight is your guide rods?
  3. Can you visualy see rifling in your barrel?
I don't know but if I was you I would be looking for a local Remington Warrenty repair center cause this don't look right at all.
