Hey,

I just got my restricted PAL in the mail and I want to start looking into getting a handgun.

I have a few noob questions here, so bear with me.

I take it that the first step is to join a range so that I can buy a handgun and get an ATT. It is impossible to buy a handgun and get an ATT without belonging to a range, correct?

Also, I need to find a range to join. I live in NW Calgary. What would be the most convenient range for me to get to on a regular basis?

Thanks for your help everyone.

I just moved to Calgary a few months ago. I joined The Shooting Edge. I have enjoyed it because it isn't too far to go and the staff and members are great. Lots of knowledge, good selection of firearms and a good indoor range. Both IDPA and IPSC shooters frequent there so lots of connections to improve your shooting.

That is my 2 cents worth.

It is on Blackfoot just south of Glemore. Access at 71st intersection.

+1 for TSE.. There are a few other choices in town, but it depends on what/when u want to shoot. Some are outdoors so you are at the mercy of the elements, others are indoors but restricted to caliber or load and may be only available on certain days. Have a look in the yellow pages for the names and they do have websites.
For convenience and all season access, you will find TSE to be a good choice. If you are looking into getting your first handgun, visit them and actually try one of their rental units to see what you like best. They also have a full selection of new and used handguns and rifles..
There, the commercial is over. Actually, in seriousness, it is an excellent choice and they are shooters as well so they know their stuff.
Welcome to the shooting world. Prepare to be without cash....
Cheers
dB:)

In Alberta you do not need to join a club to get an ATT. You also do not need a restricted firearm to get one either. Go down to TSE and I'm sure they will help you out.

Don't forget to fondle some of their nice handguns while you are there.

Buggers:D I live in Ontario and forget how good you guys got it out there!

you will probably be asked which range you are going to shoot at. you don't need to be a member there, but you should know the complete details of the range you plan to visit should the cfo request it.

I definitely recommend TSE. The guys are great and the facilities are second to none for an indoor range and retail store.

You can't go wrong with a membership at The Shooting Edge. Being indoors, you can shoot there day or night, year round. And for a new shooter, it's really nice to have access to their range guns so that you can try shooting a bunch of different handguns in the various calibers before buying one.

at the store when they are arranging the ATT they might ask you what club you shoot, just say shooting edge. they will not verify this. given how long all of the processes take for acquiring restricted firearms, i wouldnt pay for the membership (and have its 1 year terms start) until you have the gun and the att to move the gun to the range.

The lady I talked to at the Alberta CFO office said that it didn't matter if I was a member of a club or not. (Although I am). All they asked was the purpose (target shooting). They gave me an ATT good for all of Alberta, any range, gunsmith, etc. and it is good for 5 years.

Thanks for all of the great advice, guys.

Now I just need to scrape together some funds for that first handgun ;)

Look at it again Sam - if it was issued in Alberta, it should be good for BC, Alberta, Sask, and Manitoba. If not, call her back and get her to change it. :)

I will do. I was pretty sure that it was just for Alberta. It would be cool if Sask was included since we have a cabin there. Maybe I could go shoot with my grandfather again.
