New rifle, considering 17rem, 22 hornet,204 ruger

So, your saying a Hornet isn't accurate enough or powerful enough for 200 yard shots?

Accuracy is not the problem, elevation and killing power is, this gentleman does not require a firearm to shoot at targets he requires a firearm to kill small game, and if you think that you are going to reliably kill coyotes (or anything else of that size) at 200 yards with a .22 hornet you are having a lend of yourself, and before you jump on your high horse the word is "reliably",
everyone has taken a god forsaken stupid shot and actually got what they were shooting at, the description was stalking rifle(as in off his hind legs) to be used out to 200 yards.

Ps go out and measure 200 yards, then try to kill( not wound) an animal with a .22 hornet whilst standing at that distance, GOOD LUCK.

The hornets major limitation has always been the stubby bullets that need to be used to function in alot of rifles. Actually had hodgdon published this data I may not have done the conversion. And the 45 grain has a high BC for a hornet bullet it gets worst from there. You just need a rifle with the right twist and deep enough to handle the COL of a 50 grain load, then the hornet can be a 200 yard coyote load. it is amazing the difference a better bc makes.

Or the 36gr Barnes Varmint Grenade.

.149 BC at 3100-3200 fps should be plenty flat enough for 200 yards, and can be seated to fit in a Hornet magazine. +1" at 100, -2" at 200

Though my normal load is a .109 BC 35 grain VMAX at 3100fps. It's -3.25" at 200 when sighted +1" at 100.

, you might even want to consider another 223. Stevens 200 or Tikka T3 are both very lightweight, and accurate. If you handload, you could go for reduced 'blue dot' loads for the 'walking around' type shots.
That's what I'd do. I'd check out one of those Model Seven CDLs in .223 topped with a VXII in 2x7.

.

On another board there is a guy trying the 30 gr calhoons, the calhoon data indicates your are supposed to get 3400 out of a plain hornet, no mention of BC. Initial accuracy reports have come back good.

Funny you should mention that, checked one out this afternoon, nice little walking rifle, wouldn't need any new dies and could shoot the full power loads if/when I needed to. Hmm, prob go with a VXIII, think they make em in 2.5x8x36. Hav a MK4 4.5x14x50LR on the LTR which is great for shooting from a rest, no way I am steady enough to shoot it off hand at any distance:redface:Now am looking at a CZ in 223 and one in 17 rem, I am so confused maybe I should buy a 17,204 and another 223 just to relieve the stress
