New Rifle for Grizzly/moose

Only drawback is not as many rifles are chambered in 375 as compared to the 338 win mag

I have nothing against .375 or bigger cals, I like em':). But if I wanted a certain rifle, I wouldn't "not" buy it because it didn't come in .375. I'd go with it in .338WM. A lot more rifle choices in the .338, although the .375's are coming around. Even Kimber is chambering the H&H now.

Its amazing how few rifles are outfitted with factory sights these days.:(

What is even more amazing is the all the classic old rifles that are sporting gigantic matte tubes these days.

Back on topic... I have been helping Steve Harper draft a new law that will (eventually) allow the government to kick people out of Canada if they don't own a 9.3x62.

Just something to think about.

The 375 Ruger Alaskan would be ideal for your purpose. Sakos are very nice, I've had a bunch but for mainly Grizzly I'd go CRF (just bought a Stainless Classic 375) the Ruger is tough and functional, short and handy.
Gatehouse, now that I've said some nice stuff about the Ruger can you mail my your 375 and ammo for some testing?

I used a 338 with 250s and shot a number of large Black bears ( not Grizz's ) and it worked very well. The last bear i shot i hit a bit far back but still only went 150 yards with not much of a blood trail at all.
I have built my ultimate grizz gun for a future hunt I hope!!!!
I have a pre 64 action long action built on a 350 Super Mashburn Magnum that puts the fear of god into even the shooter LOL! not that bad its magna ported ..

But from my experience with the 338 WM and 250 gr Interbonds i would not even think twice to shoot Mr grizz with it.. I seen it flatten large 400 lbs + black bears

Mr Gatehouse has been an exceptionally generous guy with me.. always.... and come spring when the weather here in the Caribou is more hospitiable..i will more than likely take Clarke up on his most generous of offers..

I will again look at the Ruger..vs the Sako..so far no one has anything bad to say about Sako...

The only thing I have against the Sako is selection.....I prefer the Sako rifle to the Ruger but at Least the Ruger has a better caliber selection. Aside from that I think its a no contest win for Sako.

Steve check it out-

IMHO it's the ultimate grizz gun:

Both the 338 and 375 are great cartridges and with all the excellent bullets available to handloaders, I doubt you see a great deal of difference between the two. .

Go into the thick coastal forests of BC, where both SRUPP and I have hunted grizzlies, and tell me that you wouldn't prefer a 375 over a 338..

Maybe so, I've never seen any of BC other than the airport in Van. I personally like 375s too.

I guess my point is that the new bullets have leveled the playing field somewhat between smaller and larger cals. :)

Steve, I have been looking at the Sakos... They just brought out a rifle chambered in 338 Federal..Which may be what you saw.

A 338 Federal is based on a 308 case, necked up to accept 338 bullets. Not relaly my idea of a grizz cartridge. I am sure Sako chambers 338 Winchester Magnum, just make sure....:)

Anyway, here is a pic of a blued stainless 375 Ruger. Mine is the same shape, but wiht a dull grey finish on the barrel/action.

Steven,

I still suggest you take a look a a .375, either the 375 H&H or the new 375 Ruger as suggested by Clarke. A .338 Winchester will work great but those coastal BC Griz are big enough to consider a bit more "insurance".

For you guys curious as to why so many of us are suggesting a .375 over a .338 take a read though this thread at HuntShoot where Steven told the story of their spring 2007 bear.

Hell man! That is the size of most coastal BC Griz cubs! ;)

There is a HUGE difference between a grizzly and a black bear even when they are equal sizes. Take that same grizz and fatten it up on a diet of fish and lush coastal greens to 2 times the size of an average black bear and there is no such thing as too much gun!

.338

I own a Browning A bolt comp , Stalker in .338 . I have shot 4 Moose One Large Grizz and 4 Black bear's with it .
I make Handload's with the Nozzler .225 Gr Partition , All were one shot kill's , none required a 2Nd shot , I also own a KLEINGUNTHER K5 in .375 H&H I have made several one Shot kill's with it as well . Both are Excellent Cartriges :50cal:
