I am going to buy a new backup rifle sometime over the winter, so I can get some practice with it for next years moose hunt. I want a decent rifle for a good price. I have decided on either a Remington 770, or a Savage Edge. Both are of equal price. Looking for opinions on both rifles, as well as pros and cons. I was just reading the thread about the Remington safety issue, and the Savage Edge seems like a better buy. So what do you think?

The Rem 770 is considered the worst gun ever built. I've never owned one, but that is its reputation. So everyone on this board will tell you Savage Edge, and there will be several others who will suggest the Marlin XL7. Myself, I'd suggest the Interarms-X field mauser sold by Blue Line [a supporting dealer listed among the advertisers above].

If I had to chose between a Remington and a Savage at that price level, the Savage would be the winner. Remmy has had enough documented QC issues lately with even the regular 700 series that I wouldn't consider one of their "budget" guns. Savage has figured out how to make low cost rifles that aren't junk. They may not be pretty, but they function properly and shoot accurately.

I know a friend who had a 770 he said it was one of the biggest mistakes he ever made. Go with the savage if your looking between those two only. As a side note; a rifle i would suggest is a stevens 200. They are essentially a savage minus the accutrigger. They are cheaply priced and are honestly really good rifles. I own one and out of the box I can shoot under 2" groups from the bench with factory ammo. The only negative i can say is the stock is a bit crappy but past that they are awesome.

For what it's worth, I acquired a rem. 770 .308 as part of a trade a little while ago. I was apprehensive at first, but can tell you, several months and a whitetail later I have had zero issues with this gun. Not to mention it shoots moa all day.

p.s. The guy I got it from purchased it and then fell victim to internet " he said, she said " . He got rid of the gun, realised how much he missed it, purchased the identical rifle again, and has used it to harvest game on several hunts without a hitch.

I just pick up a Mossberg 4x4 in .270 win...and its a tack driver...real nice action and i also got the Laminated stock which i like, but thats your call, if you can get by little things like the plastic mag , i think you would be happy. Mine is not for sale, for me it does exactly what i wanted it to do.

Best Regards

Gord

Buy an Edge ( Axis ), but a decent scope on it, and a rifle basix trigger. Though the trigger isnt that bad. Just to warn you, it is a pretty light rifle, so any cartridge you chose is gonna kick harder than if it was in a 7-8 pound gun.

I have a Remington 770 in 300 winmag and works just great, I haven't had a problem with it, It was a package rifle and I still have the same scope on it. My range only goes out to 100 yards and I can hit pop cans all day with it, and that's good enough for me (Im sure I could sight it in even better). She functions just fine in any weather fall or spring hunts. It feels sturdy as heck. Iv had it for 2 years now. I love a detchable magazine+1 for sure.

I just bought a mossberg rifle (night train) a lower end on the cost scale precision firearm. I love it, I normally just sight my hunting rifles in to hit like I said pop cans and I figured hey this is a "precision rifle" I got it sighted in to 100yards to be a penny pincher. Not a big fan of this internal magazine. My first shot my the spring on my scope cover blew off and couldn't find it, kinda bugged me a bit. But I really enjoy this rifle as well.

Im checking out the savage edge (online) and it does look nice, I suggest if you haven't handled either of them both try it, and pick the one that fits you best.

Personally, I try to stay away from anything "budget" when it comes to firearms and hunting gear. There are some decent package rifle prices at Frontier Firearms , that are a step up from what you are mentioning. they even have a weatherby package for 850 i believe, so there are deals to be had out there, and I am sure they can build ya a package of what you like also.
Don't be afraid of 700's, either.

I some what agree with anything "budget" but I only consider that with pistols+ar's. I can harvest just as much game with a 125 $ sported enfield than some one else with a 1000 +$ tikka.

I switch between the 770 in 300winmag+the sported Swedish Mauser in a 6.5x55

I would love to start taking my new mossberg (cause its new, gotta break it in) but I have only put 40 down the pipe, and would still like more range time with it before I take it to harvest game. The 45-70 needs new sights (broke the tip off the end of the front sight).

I now use a .303 Lithgow, with a 4 power scope. I love it, but I was thinking of getting something "modern" for a change of scenery .I took the moose your see in my avatar picture with it last year.

Beuty! Again I suggest what feels good in your hands, not what every one else thinks. I personally like my firearms to be short and compact, is the 770 like this not at all, but I developed this taste years later. I also suggest searching the EE, you can find some alot of good things hiding around.

The only gun I would look at under $600 is the TC Venture.

I have seen 770's that look like garbage. On the other hand I have a buddy with a Edge and he loves it, although its the only gun he owns... so what does that say?

I hear the argument all the time "why buy a $1,200 rifle when you can get MOA from savage for $350 WITH A SCOPE".... well, its kinda like people who drive civics and say "why would I drive an M3? my Civic is fast enough and gets me where I want to go". The truth is ignorance is bliss, if the rifle does what you ask of it, then its the rifle for you... but if you have not drove an M3... then be happy you don't know what your missing.

My opinion is go for the Edge, the 770 is garbage.
