Hey, I'm new to the boards and don't feel like searching hundreds of posts to find a similar question to find an answer so here we go:

I am looking to purchase another milsurp for the starting collection and I was hoping to get some advice on the matter. I already own a 52 Tula refurb SKS, a 54 unissued Izzy SKS, a SKS-D (from a buddy who I paid but he hasn't come down to Alberta to deliver yet), a Remington 870 tactical in OD Green, a ruger 10/22 and my great grand-dad's double barrel shotgun from back in the fatherland. So what should I look at getting? A 98K? A SVT-40? A Mosin (what is a better rifle? the M44 or 91/30?)

I know these are some fairly broad questions and open to personal preference but I thought I could get some expert opinions instead of just my drunk buddies. Thanks! :D

Hi Recce,

You'd get as many answers as people replying.

Many folks get milsurp rifles (either WW1 or WW2) because of the history attached to them. I like Lee Enfields because, well, they were used by many of our ancestors. I also like russian Mosins, for a bunch of other reasons. I got some SKS'es because... they were cheap and available and they became my first semi-auto centrefire (ok that's not WW2 but, moving on). Why would you want a LE, or a Mosin, or a Mauser, or a Garand, or... or...

You can choose one and work on getting as many variants as possible (endless possibilities)...

Price may also be a factor. You can get three Mosins (M38, M44 and M91/30 to get started) for less than $500...

Whatever you choose, I would suggest reloading for it, as 8mm Mauser, .303British, 7.62x54r, and .30-06 can get expensive when buying factory ammo. That way you can shoot all you want for 50 cents a round instead of one dollar or more.

Any of the following:

Mauser 98k
Lee Enfield
M1 Garand
Mosin Nagant
SVT 40

Are widely available at decent prices right now, so get them while you can.

I think that collecting in this field requires that you pick a theme...from there you can branch out ...for example, you could look at getting one of each of the major players in World War II...(i,e. k98, LE, M1 Garand,MN 91-30, etc..) then you can you can go for the short variants of each...LE jungle carbine, m44 etc...then snipers variants and trainer version in .22cal, and so on...

There is so many trail to follow , you need some structure to a certain degree...in my opinion...

Enjoy

You should get a Gewehr 43.

Or an StG44.... or both! :D

My advice: buy whatever is presently a retail. If you don't like it, wait a few months till it sells out and then make a profit on the gun.

Eventually you'll find something you'd like to keep for a longer time.

Living in CANADA and NOT owning a No4???????

I suspect Desert Fox was having a bit of fun, considering the current prices of G43's;)

I guess I had better git on that. I have a 1917 No1 Mk.3, but don't have a No4 yet... :eek::eek:

With the G43's, its all in what you want really. They are not that expensive when compared to a few other options on the Military/milsurp route. Take an AR-15, Swiss Arms, for example... hell, even Garands recently are about the same price as a G43! Let's not forget pimping out an M305, it cost me roughly the same to do that as it did to get my G43.

The only issue with them is that they are hard to find. The StG44's aren't to hard to come by either, you just need your Prohib. license, or get a BD44 like me, and pay the same as a tricked out AR or Swiss arms.

In all seriousness, I would get either an SVT40, a M44-M38-M91/30 Mosin Nagant, or even a Russian capture K98. Their value will hold or go up, and they are very cheap to purchase, get a couple while you are at it. If you don't, you'll kick yourself in a year or two when they cost $1000... :(

I certainly won't tell you what to buy based on the fact what you currently have is quite a ways away from my wish list, thus are tastes are pretty far apart. What I would suggest is that you put together your own wish list in no particular order and then start saving bit at a time for one of the more expensive choices, all the while leaving enough pocket change to snap up what ever lesser expensive toy happen to cross your path.

It’s always a good idea to pick a subject, WWII, WWI, Post WWII, Boar war, Napoleonic war, Canadian, French, American, Soviet, etc…. or a general collection of what ever you can buy?? Too many guns to deal with in my opinion and if you can focus on a collection, all the better.

Fair enough about the price of Mosin's. I never really had any interest
in Mosin's until I saw the recent prices though. If I had all the money
in the world (or even a different address than my wife so she didn't
know) I would get an M1 Garand and a 98K right now.....but since I have
neither, I am looking at cheaper milsurps because I like to collect and
shoot history.

I shoot my buddies grand father's Enfield (sporterized unfortunately)
when ever I am out at his farm. I would like one that is wartime stamped
with the original stock though (but who wouldn't?) but speaking of, can any tell me how to post attachments so I can put pictures of the proof stamps from that enfield? I can't figure out what it use to be for the life of me....All I recognize is the War Department stamp..

If you want something that's currently available for a reasonable price, buy a Swiss K31 while they are still available. Tradeex (see links up top) has about ten left that don't have any cracks in their stocks, and once these are gone the Swiss Gov't will not be releasing any more. One or two other dealers out there should have some as well. You'd have to get dies from Lee and some Graf's brass, but the bullets are regular .30 cal.

Otherwise, I'd say go for the Mosins, RC Mausers, and SKS that are currently available for reasonable prices, keeping your eyes open for any decent Lee Enfield, Swedish Mausers or other targets of opportunity. I've picked up a fair share of inexpensive milsurps over time, including some very good shooters.

Cheers,

Frank

I'd go Enfield. You can still but ammo, they are "easy" to find.

The problem with Mosin, although they are much less expensive, the ammo is harder to find.

Again, if your just collecting, go Mosin, your money will go farther.
