I'm just starting to reload so I'm wondering what the order of working up a new load is? Do you start with bullet weight, type or do you start with powders etc. What is your sequence of getting to the ultimate load?

Thanks

You will get ten different answers on this one...

I do the following;

1. Choose my bullet weight
2. Choose my bullet design
3. Choose the powder based on cartridge case and bullet weight
4. Choose the starting charge and ladder up in half grain increments
5. Accuracy test with ten rounds (two 5-shot groups) for each loading
6. Take the best loads and play with OAL
7. If I am not happy with the results, start all over with another powder
8. If I am still not happy, start again, with a different bullet weight and/or design.

Could not have said it better myself.

The only thing that would add is read as much as you can on the cartridge of your choice.

I do much the same except step 5

I load 3 of each powder weight and shoot a group with some factory fodder for comparison sake then shoot my reloads from a lead sled and check group size, when I find a promising 3 shot group I'll work up 5-10 more of each +.3 and -.3 from that charge weight and shoot for groups... Initial 3 shots from each charge weight are shot at 100 meters then the next round gets shot at 300... Tune seating depth from there... It works well for most bullets except VLD target bullets, there is a article on long range hunting that I'm fairly certain Jerry AKA Mysticprecision wrote a while back on developing loads for them and it has a bunch of good info in it
