Hi Members,

I'm looking to get recommendations on the best rifle (budget $2000 - $2500) that meets the following criteria:

- Used mainly for long range sharpshooting (possibly competitive), but also very suitable for hunting big game in Canada
- Highly accurate up to 500m
- Durable and reliable in all weather conditions
- Synthetic / composite stock
- Ammo and parts are regularly stocked and readily available in Canada

As well as the ideal ammo for sharpshooting and hunting for the rifle you recommend.

You assistance would be appreciated.

You are too vague and using weird terms to get much useful replies IMO.

What do you want to hunt and where? What is your experience with firearms?

you can find such a rifle, but you enjoying the experience will depend directly on your fitness level. having a rifle that is good at competitions will be rather heavy for hunting purposes, especially if you have to hike significant distances. Tikka Ace Game or Tikka Ace Target. weight does matter.

Not a bot, just new to the forum and rifles in general - the only rifle (.270) I own was given to me from my dad. I'm looking to get back into long range sharpshooting (did it casually when younger) and looking for a rifle that could double as a sharpshooting rifle but could also be used for hunting big game (moose, deer, caribou).
 
I would say for chambering you are likely looking at something like 6.5 PRC, 7mm PRC/ rem mag, 280 AI, etc, 308, 300 WSM/win or PRC sort of thing.

You will want to refine this based on your ability to be accurate with recoil. 500 isn’t super hard, but after that it gets a lot more difficult. The creedmoor would fit well for the practice portion, but for me is lacking if you are going to be hunting out to 4-500 yards.
 
Bergara or Tikka may have something that could fit your description.
I'd be more tempted to save and buy two separate rifles.
As "Boltgun" mentioned, a long-range shooter may be a bit too heavy to haul around in the bush when covering ground while hunting.

Do some research yourself first and narrow it down some.

There are a plethora of choices and chamberings out there but you won’t understand the differences between them without doing some research yourself and gaining at least a base level of understanding of use.

Not difficult.

"Big Game" is a broad term. Elk and Brown Bear are significantly different animals compared to moose in terms of terminal performance needed to humanely hunt them.

For a "hybrid" hunting/precision shooting rifle, the Tikka CTR is probably the closest, off the shelf rifle you can buy. However, it is all compromise. Light enough to hunt with (still heavy) accurate enough with a hybrid barrel diameter (but not ideal for extreme long strings of fire) and not adjustable like a chassis. For moose, deer, black bear and long range precision shooting, 6.5 Creedmoor is the easy button. The bullets are there, the load data is there.

For Elk... many say 6.5 Creedmoor is marginal. I agree, experienced hunters and careful bullet selection are paramount.

For brown bear... just don't bother unless you like being eaten on a mountain top.

You can get the CTR in 6.5 PRC... but that's the same bullet... more speed... overkill for paper and still not going to give you any advantage on Elk or cranky bears.

The 308 will do fine to your stated 500m... but 6.5 is easier. Still not what i would call bear medicine...

So it really comes down to what you want.. a compromise (and there is nothing wrong with that)... a Tikka that mostly target shoots and occasionally hunts is not a bad thing.

For your budget of $2500, if you shop carefully and accept some things, you could pick up a CTR and a budget hunting rifle in a caliber that is suitable for anything you might want to hunt.

Tikka CTR on sale $1300
Arken EPL-4 $500

Surplus Mauser: $400
or
Savage 334 + budget optic $700
Either in 30-06 will kill pretty much anything in NA... although for bears... i would prefer a 300 Win mag.


If your $2500 budget does not include optics, then you more leeway in your purchasing... however the next level of dedicated target shooting with an eye for competition (chasing that last 10%), will suck $2500 out of your wallet faster than a 6.5 PRC...

Lots of options, just need to refine your desired outcome.
 
I’ve noticed lately when I google a question that the AI response (that I can’t turn off and is always front and center…) links often to CGN…
I guess a sites popularity can work against itself…
I’ve also noticed many sites every now and again pop into some sub routine to ensure you are human but I don’t see that happening here so likely this is a good site for AI to manipulate.
Or my tinfoil is to tight, lol
