Hi guys
My two boys have decided they both want to hunt with dad and I only have two hunting rifles right now, a Lee Enfield 303 and a savage 10, 270win, So I am going to buy another rifle.
For the record I am a fan of 6.5 calibers, the rifle in particular that I think suits my needs best would be a savage model 11 with accurate trigger. I don't know if it actually comes in any form of 6.5, the creedmoor might be nice if available but the other caliber I am strogly leaning towards is a 308 because it us readily available and can do almost anything.
Thoughts or suggestions?
Thanks
Randy

Might consider a .308 Savage Model 11/111 Hog Hunter. I have one in .223 and really like it. Low cost, fine accuracy and built for rugged use -

Howa/Vanguard, are the best value out there right now.

Savage was great years ago when you could buy the top bolt release 10-12 for 450-500.
But paying 800-900 for a new basic savage is crazy.

How old are the kids and have they shot Dads rifle?
.243 might be of interest to start, then again 308 in a reduced load for recoil tolerance ...
Weight of the gun and fitment on full scale firearms are some things to consider as well.

Rifle will be for me, both my boys are adults, sorry I still refer to them as boys(19 and 22). One has hunted with me for years while the other has never had any interest, which is why 2 guns were all I needed. Due to circumstances we have not hunted in 3 years but plan to again next fall (2017). As for the 243, I appreciate the advice but not necessary to go that small.

As for the other advice, thanks guys, I appreciate the feedback, a 6.5x55 would be cool. I have an old Lung man at home and it's fun to shoot but not reliable enough in my opinion for hunting? And it's really big, lol.

No worries Cpt.Black will, I assumed they where pre- teen .
Hence my .243 comment.
Jump to a 300 win at and you will be good to go for almost all of the Big Game in North America.
Then again I have no idea what your Provincial regs say about caliber restrictions if any.
300 winmag is a 30:06 with some performance enhancements.
Your money, your taste and eventually the flavour of choice will let you know what is coming home with you .
Best Regards,
Rob

300 WM and 308 is easy to find I can pick up a both at the local Co-Op on Haida Gwaii

All the 6.5s will be harder to find ammo fore but can't blame you for wanting one I have a couple of 6.5x55
One I pick up parts from TradeEx added a trigger spun a new berrel on and and stock and wond up one hell of a cracky rifle I built my salf

7mm-08, 7x57, 7x64, 270, 6.5x55, 308, 30/06, 300WBY, 300WM, 8mm Mauser. Any of these will do. Match the calibre/bullet selection to the game in question. Shooter should also be comfortable handling & shooting the firearm.

I'd put the the 303 away and buy two nice 308s for them the same and use the 270 myself. Something that they will want to keep for a lifetime and say dear old Dad gave me this when they pass it down to their kids.

Pity the lad who gets stuck with the old war horse, early 1900s 303 whilst the other gets a new one. Think about it. :)

Being from Llyodminster Id skip the whole interweb thing and talk to Clay at Prophet River....he will get you into the right gun. Id buy a new Tikka T3x in 30-06, best value out there in my mind but that's me.

Cheers!!

T/C ProHunter is good way to go
I keep a eye out on EE for barrels that's what I did and happy with it
As to date I have 12 gage Turkey barrel,308,223,300wm with my Collection of barrels I can hunt anything
Im realy tempted to see if a 6.5-300 Weatherby barrel can be made for me this spring after I start reloading

Don't pity them, they are kinda fighting over that one, they both love the Lee Enfield, and frankly so do I. It's a great gun, and the one I have taken more deer with than any other. Frankly guns like this gorgeous me are a tool not a show piece, I can't justify spending thousands of dollars on a rifle when I can do the same thing with a $600 rifle.
Thanks for the input.

I really think it's going to come down to finding the gun I like and taking which ever ca liber it comes in.

Popped into prophet river yesterday, looked at a couple Howa's in 308 and 6.5, not really interested in a 30-06, don't know why but it's not really on my radar.

If you want the 6.5 you'll love the .25-06. Easier to find ammo (at least where I am) as it's a Springfield based cartridge. Most entry level rifles are chambered for it. I have a savage axis 2 I picked up on sale at Cabela's for under 400 a few years back. Huge improvements over the plain axis. Throw away-bushnell scope upgraded to a serviceable Weaver (mine is still on set after 100 RDS) and has the Accutrigger. I was leery of the quality at that price but was pleasantly surprised with the accuracy and durability. It was the only gun I took to Michigan for deer this year.

Find out what ammunition can be purchased locally in the range of chamberings and pick one that is available at all times.

Listed was 6.5X55, .308 - 7MM-08 would be a good choice as well.

Strangely, I only really considered the 7mm-08 today, there seems to be quite a few rifles that I like in that caliber.

Quick update, I am in Edmonton today and dropped into a few shops. Found a browning blr stainless w/lam stock and fell in love. It's got everything I ever wanted in a rifle but didn't think existed. Lever action in a long range caliber and has a detectable magazine, what's not to love.
Anyone have any feedback on the Browning?
I have not bought one yet and with the gun show in Lloydminster next weekend I will wait and see what's there first
Thanks
Randy
