Hi go with the 308 it gives you a wide choice of projectiles weights for all kinds of use, the Savage model 11 or Savage weather Warrior . With the 308 you can pick surplus ammo for practice.
 
Your model 42 lungman(sp) in 6.5-55 should be more than just reliable. I have owned many and the were all great, but damb heavy. Lots of 6.5 rifles out there, just need to search. All said, any mid cal from the 25-06 to 300 win. will do. Find a rifle that fits and comes to the shoulder smooth, than choose a cal.

Ya the blr's are quite the unit, was the one you looked at a takedown model?

As far as 6.5s go, everyone owes it to themselves to shoot a creedmoor. I refuse to lie, but I have had 6 friends shoot my gun, and all 6 have bought their own since. I am due to lend it out again and I don't see the trend changing.

Quick update, I am in Edmonton today and dropped into a few shops. Found a browning blr stainless w/lam stock and fell in love. It's got everything I ever wanted in a rifle but didn't think existed. Lever action in a long range caliber and has a detectable magazine, what's not to love.
Anyone have any feedback on the Browning?
I have not bought one yet and with the gun show in Lloydminster next weekend I will wait and see what's there first

BLR is nice hunting rife and there fun to shoot I don't think of them as a long range rifle but I'm not a long range Hunter

Don't tell me sister that the BLR is a close in shooter. She popped her first deer (A nice buck Whitetail) at 400 yds. with her .243 BLR 81 on the outskirts of Vernon whilst shooting across a cornfield from the hood of her truck. Plucky gal she be.:)
 
6.5 creedmore, only reason for me to not buy, availability of ammo, yes it's getting better but I have had to show self restraint in not buying one.
As for the BLR being long range, I am comparing it to other lever calibers like the 30-30. I max out at about 400 yards for hunting, so I think the 308 works well for my needs.

Haahaa good fore her I always supected BLR is capable of more then my shooting abilitys but I don't practise nearly as much as I shod I'm to old school lol
I Never claimed to be a shorter just a northern BC boy that love hunting fishing and trapping

Long range is not only in chambering choice, precise and consistent trigger pull is also required.
The trigger on the BLR is not adjustable and rather heavy. Will take some getting used to.

Search BLR trigger and you will find lots to read. :)

I sold mine ...
