New Rifle Test Win .270 WSM

First off the 30's and 7mm were compared magnum to magnum. The 270's are non-magnum to magnum. If you don't need the reach/energy why put up with the extra recoil? And the type of game has not been considered. Now if the given cartridge was more efficient, could be downloaded, had better inherent accuracy, etc., one might argue that's reason enough to get another rifle. (Like any of us need that...)
Besides, it should have been called the 280 WSM..:)...there might have been a better comparison from a 280 to the 7WSM. I wonder how a 270 or 280 AI would compare to the WSM's? And let's not forget the comparitive cost and availability of ammo for those who don't make their own. Why aren't the Weatherby magnums more popular?

Well, where to start. My .270 WSM is 'good' because I can load it down to low end .270 Winchester levels for plinking or small game, or I can load it up to exceed .270 Win maximums by about 200 fps. Recoil doesn't even enter the picture unless you are limited to factory ammo. So I guess then (no, I know then) that the .270 WSM is a more versatile caliber in .277 than the venerable .270 Win. It's okay, Jack's dead. Also, I agree with sureshot's comments on the validity of this short magnum's existence, compared to the others. What was the question?

Sorry to hijack your thread Blowback,........nice Rifle(M70) you have there, enjoy your new firearm, it will take care of most of what we have in Canada, except maybe the large bears, and for whitetail, will be good well beyond what I would probaly shoot at?

Now back to the WSM Dog and Pony show,........ Roy Weatherby developed a .277" successor to the venerable .270 back nearly 70 years ago, that cranked up the horsepower and left no room to argue between the two. 45 years later and along comes the new"kids in the hall", putting a middleweight in against the champ(270WM), and claiming a title they know they will never own. The .270 stepped aside once to a worthy champ, it will never concede to WSM hype.;)

Of all the WSM's, the only one that I see with any advantage(only talking speed here-not effectiveness) is the 270wsm. 270 Win is a fine round and probably one of the top 5 deer calibers of all time. Are Wsm's or Saum's really nec, it's really what you like and dislike. Maybe it's outright speed or maybe its having the latest cartridge. I could have bought a 7mm Rem mag but I chose it`s near identical ballistic twin the 7wsm. For me, it was about having something a little different than the next guy. I think it is the same for a lot of people since there are a lot of different types of Ackley cartridges which are based on good ol standby pre existing rounds that were great by their own rights like 25-06 and 6mm and the list goes on. Most had gains of around a 100 or so fps so why do they do it-something different or just the speed-its what makes them feel good in the end is my guess.

I sure am a fan of the 270 WSM (and the regular 270). Corlane's build me one on a CRF model 70 with a 24 " Lilja (thin) in a nice lightweight rig. When I do my part, it puts 3 rounds of 130gr TSX (R22) in 0.3 to 0.4" They averaged 3329 fps over the chrony. I recovered a bullet under the skin of an elk shot at a lasered 348yds and it looks exactly like the expanded bullets in the advertisements. It has shot 5 deer, 3 elk, and 1 moose and that was the only bullet recovered. All folded like a cheap tent. What I like about the TSX is that you can break a shoulder and usually get a through and through.

I do like the short action part of the gun although occasionally it gets grumpy cycling the 2nd round in quickly under hunting conditions. That is the only short fall of this cartridge.

You have bought yourself a wonderful hunting rig that with the right bullet can hunt anything in North America with the exception of the biggest bears....although if I ran into an irate grizzly I would still rather have the 270 than nothing at all.

Shoot it lots and enjoy the heck out of it.

haters,always haters.

Probably should rethink that post.

Probably should rethink that post.

GT,.... I will keep a look out for one on our local range. I'll keep the old M70 FWT wth me each time I go so i can chrony both handloads and factory ammo against the same weight in the WSM. Then I will repost. Actually I'll start a new thread, and post the results whatever they are.

Season's Greeeting's.:)

just have to chime in here,i have owned both and the 270 wsm shot like a laser, didnt chrony either just worked up loads till pressure signs and couldnt believe the trajectory of the wsm

This is ridiculous. A man is proud of buying a new rifle and people are stealing his thunder because its a WSM?

I am not a fan of the idea of having a WSM in MY safe, but I sure like the idea of putting another rifle in it, which is the main point of this thread.
Is it me or does this happen a lot on this forum?

Congrats on your purchase.

I believe I already took care of apologizing for hijacking his thread over the .277 debate, and congratulating the gentleman on his purchase. Just read all the posts.
