So I'm finally ready to hit the range with my first rifle and thought I'd share some pics. For those in a similar situation to myself, i.e. budget conscious, I feel I ended up with a pretty decent setup for under $1K (incl. taxes & shipping) for everything you see in the pics.

Thanks to this forum I was able to compile a short list of literally everything I needed and now I'm set.

Here's the relevant gear:
Weatherby Vanguard Synthetic in 308 Win (with 1 1/8" MOA target from factory)
Vortex Diamondback 3-9x40 with BDC reticle
DNZ (Dednutz) Game Reaper one-piece scope mount

Now to spend LOTS of quality time at the range. :50cal:

Thanks for looking.

Wow, all you kit is shinny and new. My stuff is caked full of carbon, oil and s**t. Even your tape's increments are legible.
Pretty good for a first gun. Mine was a hand me down .22 cooey caked full of carbon, oil and s**t.
Have fun at the range and keep your safety on. You don't want to be blasting .308's into your neighbours house.:D

Nice rig, you did well for 1K..... Enjoy you range outing as well....!

Great pictures BTW.....I really want a Vanguard like yours only in .257 Weatherby........

Let us know how it shoots....:)

I have been looking at the Vanguard as well. It seems like a great value from a very well respected brand ,the 1 1/8th moa targets are I think 5 shots not 3 and now you can get the exotic Weatherby proprietary calibers like .257 that used to be only available in the MarkV's.

What are some of the advantages of a .257 Weatherby over say a .308?

Edit ,my bad only 3 shots.

I think you should be pleased with the decisions you made on your first rifle. And all at a very good price.

Have fun!

I've got one in .257 Weatherby, it's a great gun. Extremely accurate and well-built. It's my tree stand deer rifle, 100gr TSX @3500+ makes for one flat-shooting gun. Mine has a Burris Fullfield II on it and I am considering the Deadnutz mount for it as well as I like the one-piece design over my Weaver base/rings configuration.

I just received my new Vanguard Varmint Special in .308 a few weeks ago. This is my first scoped bolt-action rifle and so far I am quite pleased. The fit and finish are especially good for a $600 rifle. (much better than comparably priced Rems and Savages) I mounted a 10x40 Bushnell 3200 Mil-dot scope on Leupy rings and still kept the price under $1000.

So far I am pleased with the accuracy. 3 shot groups at 200yds were 2 - 2.5 inches with the cheapest 180gr Winchester ammo from Wal=mart.Nothing spectacular, but I'm not much of a rifle shooter and I was just using a piece of 6x6 timber for a rest. With more practice and decent loads, I'm sure the rifle will shoot ~1 moa.
