Im looking at getting another new hunting rifle but wanting something lighter than my 9lb Ruger...

Ive pretty much decided on what rifle I want but not sure on the caliber.. I love the 270 win but am wondering if the 270 wsm is worth looking at getting.. This will be mostly used for deer, goats, sheep etc..

Any thoughts?

short answer is no. And, no offence to the WSM owners out there, but for what you gain in velocity over costs recoil and availability, for the pros/cons ratio of the WSM over the win, I would recommend the 270 win.

Unless, and only if you are way more into guns and reloading then just hunting, and more into playing with longer range shooting would I say to go with the WSM.

How about : Remington
Remington actually makes three different light rifles. The Mountain Rifle and the Model 7, . Available in six different calibers they weigh in at 6 1/2 pounds,

This and take a serious look at the tikka t3 if you want a light and accurate rifle.

Thanks for the suggestions on rifles guys but Im more seeking info on the calibers.

Like I said above I have the brand of rifle determined already.

In a pinch you can get bluebox Federal ammo for the 270 Win at Bob's corner store in butt-nowhere Northern Ontario for under 25 bucks a box.

If you can find 270 WSM at anywhere beside either a well stocked gun shop or one of the major hunting chains you are lucky and when you do find it you are usually dropping something north of 40 bucks a box for the lowest quality loads. In something that I would actually want to shoot if it really counted (like maybe a Nosler product) you can consider dropping maybe 60 bucks for a box.

Now you can drop almost as much on a box of 270 Win but the difference is you have about 50 or 60 options between the cheapest and most expensive box of shells.

Not so with the WSM.

If you reload and you want the extra 100-200 fps, then go for it, otherwise I would go with the 270 Win.

If you look at the terminal ballistics the 270 Win can reach out AND kill the critters you list @ between 550-650 yards - way further than the average guy can shoot with any accuracy. At it's best, the WSM might stretch that another 150 yards, which while considerable, you are now pushing 800 yards which is loooooong range and if you were capable of shooting that far you probably wouldn't be posting asking "which one".

At 300 to 400 yards whatever you hit with .277 projectile won't know or care whether it was a standard or mag and neither will kill it any "deader".

I will put it one other way however,

If you buy the 270 Win and will forever regret that you didn't get the "bigger brother", then don't even consider the standard caliber. Because regardless of how well it performs you will always figure you could have picked better.

Actually, the brand of rifle could have some bearing on which caliber you chose. A WSM loses some of its appeal if its housed in a long action. Also, mag boxes lengths versus length to lands are a consideration. Rifles are much easier to get along with when seating bullets to the lands is an option.

That aside there is enough velocity difference in the Wissum to make it worth while, and it only takes a few pennies worth of powder to get it. Mine has more in common with my .270 Weatherby than it does to my .270 Wins. On the other hand, the Win will probably hold a couple more shells in the box than a WSM and tend to be a little slicker feeding. Either of those could matter to you.

He says he has decided on the rifle, just undecided on calibre.
All things considered, for the game you plan to hunt, you can't go wrong with a 270 Winchester.

ok so a few things
ballistically 264,270, 280,284 are absolute best diameter and carry the best BC
I had a magnum in 284 but became more recoil shy and was seeking more accuracy .
your on the right track with the 270
remember you give up accuracy on follow up shots with a lighter rifle.
Most of your weight is in the barrel . 6.5-7 lb rifle is getting pretty thin on the barrel
lots of harmonics 8-9 is better

just remember it's all compromise I opted for 9 lb and 264 and gave up my magnum
but I'm shooting 3 shot group 1/2 inch at 300 yards and that's not MOA

Another reason to go with the 270 win, magazine capacity...

The Tikka and savage only hold two in the magazine for WSM's whereas the 270 win should be 4 or 5, I got the big magazine for the savage so it holds 5, but now it is a bit awkward and doesn't carry in the hand as easily.

Tikka WSM hold three in the mag...as far as the caliber cost, the WSM is mega bucks to buy ammo for, unless you reload...if i were to do it all over again i would still go with the WSM just because thats the way i am...more money for more boom i guess

I had a .270 win in the past and loved it.... Just wanted to see thoughts on if the wsm is worth getting or not but it doesnt sound like it.. Seems to be more pro's to the win.

And as a bonus I still have a box of 270 win ammo in my cabinet..

I have a buddy who wanted a .270 WSM so badly. IT WAS SO-O-O ###Y! He bought it last year and still hasn't fired it. Rounds are too expensive so he is collecting brass (.300WSM to re-form) until he can get enough to work up a round for it. But, he HAD to have it and it over-extended his allowance. Good decision? Who knows, it's his decision. But, he hunted with a vanilla '06 in a M77 this year instead.
IMHO, make sure you get a rifle you can afford to feed. If that's not a problem, then go hard! Your money, your choice, but you better know that hand loading is the only way to get the best out of that cartridge, and at 6lbs, ITS GONNA HIT YA!

Had the magnum virus for years, .300WinMag-.270WBY-.300WBY-another .300WinMag, seems the bug left me. I now hunt with a .270Win in a Vanguard. It's 7.5lbs, not a light weight, but still easy to carry and stupid accurate.

don't think you can go wrong with either calibres

what lighter weight rifle did you have in mind?

as far as the wsm hard to find thing, I don't believe that, I've had a wsm for 5 years now, I don't handload yet and I've never had an issue to find in any store I've been between ON and BC, 300 and 270wsm is widely accessible...provided I don't plan to run out of ammo when going hunting in the middle of butt-#### nowhere lol

and of course even easier if you handload, or plan to eventually
