I’m looking at buying a new rifle and would like to get some or your opinions and experience on which would be the best choice for a hunting/sporting gun.
The guns that I’m currently looking at are as followed.

Sako 85 hunter
Sako 85 Bavarian
CZ 550 lux
Mauser M03 or M98

All good.

The Sako '85 Hunters are very popular, the stock design of the Bavarian a little far out in left field for most ... maybe a resale issue.

CZ's are well made and have a following, but not on a scale with the '03 Mauser, the Mauser being probably the nicest of the lot, depending which way you order it ... lots of options. Expect the '03 Mauser to be some
$ 1200 - $ 1300 more than the Sako 85 Hunter. Expect close to $ 3000 for the base '03 with taxes. The Mauser '98's are very nice ... but at a list price
of around $12,000 to $14,000, you had better KNOW what you want ...
and not ask advice here !

Those are very expensive rifles... and not knowing your background... but looking at your "newbie" status... they are a very big purchase for a first of even second rifle.

Just my opinion... no offence intended. Good luck and post pics of whatever you get.

Something a little easier on the wallet but still really nice is a Tikka.

Thanks guys.

Don’t let the newbie status on this web site fool you. I have plenty of other rifles. I have narrowed it down to the list of rifles I personally like and wanted to get other opinions.
It’s hard to find a price list or even a place that sells Mauser rifles in Canada, so I was not aware of the high price on the M98.

That's the price on the actual Mauser brand. There are lots of rifles that are built on variations of mauser 98 actions, such as the Rem 798, Interarms X, Charles Daly, Zastava, as well as older model husqvarnas, and others. Don't overlook the Winchester 70 Classic, also a nice one.

The Canadian importer wants you to buy one sight unseen. I asked them if anyone in Canada had inventory - nope. I wonder how many they have sold? Wankers.

If you like the European stuff, check out Heym, Sauer, and Blaser, too.

(P & D has great prices on a few Sauer 202's)

Yes, I like the European stuff best. I like a traditional looking rifle (wood/blued) with some type of scrollwork is nice too.

Check out Londero's used firearms page hxxp://www.arcinter.com/fr/listes_completes_des_armes_usages/index.html - lot's of goodies in there.

I like the ergonomics of my sako 85 hunter. Im not a wood guy but I couldnt get a synthetic. I was pleasantly surprised. The gun shoots better than I do.:dancingbanana:
