So I have been for some time agonizing over my next new rifle purchase. what I am looking for is a light rifle say something along the lines of the Ruger ultra light, Rem model 7 ,Win featherweight or Tikka in 257 Rob ,260 Rem, 7-08 or 308.All these are about the same price. My first choice was the 260 and then the 257.It is a deer rifle and maybe used for moose. ( I have a 7MM Rem mag that I use on moose hunts) Also it will have to double as coyote gun as well.
My problem is I cant make up my mind which way to go, so I hope some of you folks could offer their opinions or guidance.
I am a reloader so have no issues with ammo availability.

kimber montana in .257 roberts :D Gonna be a bit more $ than the rifles mentioned but definately the lightest and it comes in .257 bob. The kimber classics are also very light if your looking for a wood stock.

The 257 Roberts would be a good choice, plenty for deer, light kicker, decent enough reach... And a little different then the run of the mill. But if your preference is run of the mill, the 243 is probably the starting point for deer. Yotes can be dispatched with a 22 mag or 22 Hornet or 223, or a 220 swift.

I bought Ruger Ultralight in 243 from Wholesale sports this fall. Already took one blacktail deer with it. With good light scope and Harris Bipod it is a joy in the field plus no pain on the shoulder

Remington Mountain LSS in 7-08 and Zeiss Conquest 3-9

Can still load up some heavier bullets 150+ and still be accurate to beat all heck, or go lighter for deers, Barnes 120's or something, you'll still have the punch of a 308 with better BC bullets, .260 is close also but not available in that rifle.

Yes strongly leaning that way at least I have the very scope you mention already. I wish the Ruger ultralight came in the 260

They make the Compact in Laminate/Stainless. It's got a stubby little barrel on it. Not a bad rifle, but I just like Remington actions and TRIGGERs a lot :D

Yea I thought I had it narrowed down to that one but when I got to fondle it at the store it was not doin it for me (ok just so you know I am talking about handling a firearm in a sporting goods store)

I would have gone to the .260 in a Remington 7 except I wanted a 24 inch barrel. I am now going to a custom build on a Remington 700 S/A with a Shilen S/S barrel.

So since you handload, I'd say get a Tikka in 6.5x55. It'll do what you want a .260 to do, but in a tikka there's no advantage in getting a short action chambering.
I have a T3 hunter that used to be a 6.5x55. Now it's a 6.5-06.

Or, get a Rem 700 MTN rifle in 7-08. I have 2 MTN rifles in .280 and the LSS version in 30-06. I love those guns.

If I could get a 700 MTN rifle in .260, I would jump at it!
