I am wondering what groups you can get out of new rifles without doing anything to them. Just put a scope on, sight the rifle in & shoot a few groups to see what kind of groups you can get. I bought a 7mm UltraMag LH from Milarm in Edmonton last Saturday( it looks like it had been sitting there quite awhile- Brand newBDL with the J-lock on the bolt.) took it home and put it in the gun safe . October 4th, I went to Wholesale sports, bought a Bushnell 6500 2.5-16-50 model, leupold rings & bases. Had them put the scope on and then left and went to Phoenix Range to sight the gun in. took a shot- little low. adjust scope - take another shot -right height, left of center. Make adjustment and another shot. right where i wanted it. Cleaned gun, shot 3 shots - a perfect cloverleaf 3/8 " center to center. I thought fluke- no way. cleaned gun and shot 3 more, same thing -nice group 3/8". Cleaned gun and thought once more-same thing 3/8". On the way home from the range i stopped at my uncles farm and tried his range out- home made 100 yd target setup. 3 shots- 3/8" Am I lucky or does this happen to everybody? the ammo iwas using was Remington 150gr Swift Sirroccos in 7mm UltraMag.

Most rifles can shoot really well with the right load.... you are lucky to find one with the first load.... another load may not shoot that well. On my M-995 Sako in 270 Wby, I was shooting 1/2" groupings with the first handloads I tried. 140gr Accubonds.... and IMR 7828, so I did not look for any load after that for it.

how much you want for that old BDL with the dreaded J-lock??...:)

Seriously....a couple weeks back at the range I ran into a young fellow shooting an "out of the box" Rem 700 SPS in 30-06...the groups he was getting were very impresive.....all were about 3/4" at 100 meters and under 1-1/2" at 200 Meters...some new rifles will shoot well right out of the box....some won't....this guy had picked a good one.
